The Truth Hurts

Be honest with me, ok? What am I talking about, you're always honest with me. That's what I love about you guys. I realize I'm not very far into the sock (discounting the 2 1/2 inches of ribbing of course), but I want to know what you think of it.

Start of the Cables

Do the cables work? Can you even tell there are cables going on with this sock? This yarn might not have been the best choice for the pattern. It is kind of splitty and working the cables (without a cable needle - is there any other way?) is not that pleasant. I'm trying to decide if I should just keep going, rip it out and reuse the yarn for a different pattern, or switch to a different yarn and stay with this pattern. What do you think?

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions on the pants. I am not going to do anything with them until after I get back from Philly this weekend. I'm just not up to the challenge right now and I find that with sewing I have to be on my game or it just isn't any fun at all. So, Rogue will get some love before the weekend and then I'll decide what to do with the pants when I get home. Distance is a good thing in this situation.

I love the yarn and I love the pattern but together they might not be as perfectly matched as you'd hope. Listen to the little voice in your head - if you don't think you'll love them then try something else.

Love the yarn - but if you're not happy with it, knitting the sock is going to be miserable!

Try stretching it out and see how it looks. Sometimes those "hairy" yarns don't look that great in a pattern.

I think it looks good, if a bit subtle.

However, if you're already questioning it, I say frog it. No one wants to deal with two whole socks' worth of splitty yarn. I'm sure you'll find a better project for it.

Based on the picture, I think it looks great. The cables are subtle, but they are definitely visible. I don't think the yarn hides them at all. But if you aren't enjoying knitting them, then rip it out and knit something else.

If the process isn't all that fun then it might be good to stop. You have two socks to do...why fight it. You could just go back to 2x2 rib for the whole sock. Have a good trip!

I think it's lovely! But if you are not enjoying knitting it, maybe you should try something else.

I like the way the socks are turning out, though since you can't really tell that they're cables, I'd probably scrap it. Especially since it's the cabling that's bugging you. I like the swirling down the sock, but I can't think of a pattern off the top of my head that does that. Good luck whatever you decide!

I like how the cables look soft - they look wavy. But you may just want to follow your instinct.

I think it looks good! But I know what it's like to knit on something you're not loving, so if that's the case, you should give it up :)

Cables and splitty yarn sounds a bit of a pain to me, if you are not feeling that it is right frog it! I don't think that the cables show enough. I love the yarn though. If you don't mind please could you comment on my blog as I am donating 5 pence per comment to Cancer Research this month, so the more the merrier! x

I think it looks very pretty but if you're not enjoying it then you should definitely find a new pattern for the yarn.

I think it looks lovely! But I have a particular love for tonal solids. Also, I can see there is cabling, but it is subtle. However, if it isn't fun to knit, RIP, RIP, RIP!!

Posted by: jillian at October 3, 2007 11:11 AM

My truthful answer is that I love it. The cables are very subtle, and remind me of brooklyntweed's new cable handspun hat. If it's a total pain though, I say don't put yourself through the hassle, but if you can manage, I think it'll be a very lovely sock. :)

Have some faith. When I knit these socks they looked wonky like that until I got much further along. The smooth continuity of the cables in the photo came out only after I washed them. I'd keep with it.

Actually, I really like how the cables look in the yarn. It's a bit different - a little softer, a little subtler. But if it's a pain to work with, perhaps it's best to rip!

Posted by: connie at October 3, 2007 11:38 AM

the truth may be that the cables dont pop enough... but the yarn is gorgeous!

Posted by: stinkerbell at October 3, 2007 11:39 AM

Theresa beat me to it...I was also going to say that it's too soon to tell with that pattern! Now, if you really hate working the yarn, that's another thing. And, hey, we are going to be in the same time zone....too bad Philly wasn't a bit closer. And I wasn't being held prisoner by the plumbers.

The truth? They look good. I would carry on.

I think it looks lovely so far. And wow, that is one long cuff. I always get so sick of ribbing, I'm lucky if I get an inch of cuff done.

Posted by: Emma at October 3, 2007 4:53 PM

I love it!!!

But like everyone else, if you aren't enjoying the knitting........ rip it.

Posted by: Carol at October 3, 2007 8:41 PM

I think the yarn is gorgeous and the pattern looks good. I wonder what they look like on your feet though. I find that socks that I'm knitting look better on because it stretches out the cable and makes the pattern stand out a little. Have you knitted the Monkey socks from Knitty yet? I loved that pattern and they look great in the Koigu KPPPM I used.

Good luck with the job search. My husband is an attorney and he said he never wanted to do criminal work. Well, now he works as a Public Defender. I recently suggested working in his father's firm where they do mostly civil work and he said he couldn't stop doing criminal work now that he's been doing it. I think of it as one of those professions where you have to try on many hats before you find one that you want to wear for a while!
