So Begins Socktoberfest
Happy Socktoberfest to you all. Tis the season for socks, and I didn't have a single pair in the works. Sad and completely unacceptable, don't you think? Plus I'm flying to Philadelphia on Friday and there's no way Rogue is going to fit in my purse. I have a big purse, but not that big. Rogue's hood is almost done - another 10 or 15 rows I think - and that is one heavy sweater! So, after I made the decision that I needed to start a pair of socks, then I had to actually decide on a pattern. And after the pattern came the yarn. These are not easy decisions, people!
After much debate I decided on the Uptown Boot Socks from Favorite Socks. And I am knitting them in the Liza Souza sock yarn YaiAnn gave me. I went to the movie (the Kingdom) last night and made some progress on the cuff, so I officially have a sock on the needles! WooHoo.

The pants I'm sewing ... they aren't going that well. The waistband is HUGE and the legs/hips are tight. I don't know if I'm going to try to alter the pattern to make if fit or if I'm going to chalk it up to a bad choice on my part and find a different pattern. The legs/hips are a fairly easy fix. I can just add an inch or so to the pattern and I think that would be fine, but the waist is a different story. We're talking probably six inches.

What do you think? Try to alter the waistband or not? This sewing business drives me crazy sometimes, but when it works out it's pretty great. Sigh. Now I just wish it would work out.

What do I think? Quit sewing and get back to knitting. Or spinning. ;-)

If you're just working with muslin then I think it's worth it to monkey around and see if you can get it right. If it doesn't work out then no big deal, but if it does then you've really learned something.

No sympathy from me....at least you HAVE a waist!
As for Socktoberfest, I joined the group on Ravelry and only had to click on the yarn I decided to use (my one and only STR, acquired at risk of life and limb at MDSW) and found probably four hundred different sock patterns that people had used successfully. So, now I have too many choices and can't decide. Sigh.

I guess it depends on how much you think you would like the pants if the DID fit. From the picture, it doesn't look like it would be too hard to make the waist band smaller. And there must have been something about the style you liked or you wouldn't have chosen the pattern.

I don't know about the pants, but I do love the color of that yarn. It reminds me of crushed black raspberries.

There is always a solution in sewing. Think of it constructively. I don't know if you have a Body Form, but those can help you pin and tuck. Can you swing a dart in the back where the back belt loop is located? Since I can't see the whole thing, it is the only suggestion I can offer. I can't wait to see the finished piece. Good luck.

I'm not really a sewer myself, but that looks exactly like a problem I run into ALL. THE. TIME. with pants in stores - things that fit over the thighs, hips, butt, just down nip in at the waist. It frustrates me to no end. Anyway, I have a couple friends who ARE sewers and have this problem as well, and they'll buy the ill-fitting pants and then take two seconds to sew some darts in the back and they end up looking great. Perhaps that would help here?

You definitely need to put some taper in that wasitband. With it's deep cut you would have a hard time getting the hip measurement and waist to be close. I guess it all depends how much you like the style.

hmmm, maybe you could go down a size on the waist and put darts in in the back to match it up?

I gave up sewing years ago just for that reason. If you can figure out how to make it work then you'll know from now on...it might be worth the effort.

Lovely start on your sock. I'll have to try that pattern.

You're coming to Philly?

Did you work on your cuff in the movie theater? I have never knit in a theater before. Maybe I need to give that one a try.

Wow, thought I was the only one in the world who hadn't knit Rogue yet, started last week and am working on the sleeves. Yours look great, the tweedy colour is a perfect match for the pattern!

The socks are in a lovely shade. It is a shame about the trousers. I hope you can fix it, I would get cross with them and give up!

Happy Socktoberfest!!!! I sadly have no socks on the needles either!!!
Hmm - those pants seem like quite an alteration project! They'd be a good challenge though....

Hmmm... as a sewer with more than 40 years experience, my first thought when I saw the photo of your pants is that it looks like the yoke/waist part is upside down. Of course, I could be totally wrong as I'm clueless to the pattern you're using, so please don't be offended. Sorry you're having so much trouble, but sewing, like knitting, improves with practice. Keep at it; I promise it will get easier.

it appears, from the angle you show is that the pattern does not decrease in circumference from upper hip to waist, while you do.
maybe a dart or tuck in the waistband? also, if this is the "trial" constuction, when you recut in the actual material, cut the waistbank as a curved piece so that the top has a smaller diameter than the bottom, and readjust the belt loops as desired. good luck.
