Ooops
After reading all of your comments yesterday, I decided to cast on in a different yarn and see if I thought it was the yarn or the pattern or the combination of the two. I've had some gorgeous Sundara Yarn in my stash for a long time and since I seem to be on a red kick lately I was drawn to it.

I did the first set of cable crosses and had just started the second set when this happened

What is wrong with me? Why do I continually break needles? I know I'm not a tight knitter. Heck the needle that broke wasn't even the needle I was using - it was the one holding the stitches. And I loved those needles. They were nice and pointy. It isn't like I am without other needles. I have some very nice Lantern Moon Sox Stix (my second set, I broke a needle in the first set) and some really long metal ones in 2.25mm, but I'm just annoyed I manage to break so many needles. I considered going to the KnitPicks metal needles, but my preference for socks is a wood needle. Then I ran across their new Harmony wood dpns. The description claims they're very durable and you get six in a pack! I thought it might be worth a try so I ordered a set. Well, I didn't actually order them because they aren't available and they're going to notify me when they become available (the set isn't available either). Grrr. I am not a patient person. I hate to wait. Oh well, I'm not sure what choices I have. Anyway, I'm going to keep knitting on the second version of the sock and see what I think, but so far the smoother yarn seems to be working better with this particular pattern.
Tomorrow morning - early - I'm off to Philly for the weekend. I am not taking my computer (I know - the horror), so I won't be around until Monday. I promise to take lots of pictures and have lots to tell you next week to make up for my absence. Have a great weekend.

Too funny. I was complaining about similar things just yesterday. Because I break so many needles, I'm trying out the metal KnitPicks and they just aren't the same as wood. I just got a set of the Harmony (which come 6 to a pack!), but haven't tried them out yet.

Those new KnitPicks needles look really neat. 6 to a pack - pretty neat!!!!

ah RATS! Some needle manufactures will give you another one if one breaks?

I don't use wooden needles, what a pain with them breaking. Have a nice computer free weekend!

Arg! I hate it when my needles break. I'm very sorry to hear about your needle mishap. Hope some replacements come soon.

i think you've been reading my thoughts! i prefer wood DPNs but i've broken 2 needles this year already. i've been thinking about buying the new knitpicks needles but i wanted to hear some reviews before jumping in. please let us all know what you think once they arrive!

Oh no! I too love knitting with wood and bamboo needles, but they are so fragile sometimes.
Have you used Brittany wood needles? They have a 5 year guarantee - even if it's your fault they'll send you new needles when they break. I don't work for them or anything, I just think it's a great service.

I did that all the time with the Brittany needles. Annoyed me such that I got a pair of the short metal addis and I have never gone back.
Come between me and my sock needles and I will cut you :)

Hmmm, I think I preferred the other yarn! Though Sundara does make lovely yarn. I still need to get some to try...
Poor needle! Hope you get replacements soon. So far, I haven't broken any, just bent them out of shape.

Don't worry about us, but have fun! I always break wooden DPN's too (and bend the metal ones). What a stunning red!

Have fun in Philly--glad you're back to blogging! I had some brittany's break--I will have to try out that tip on replacement, though I was on vacation when it happened so probably in a trash-dump somewhere. At least they're biodegradable...My clovers are pretty bent and I am afraid they will break at any time but so far they've held up well (and they have been tested!).

The Sox Stix are guaranteed too! I have had the Brittanys and SS replaced by the manufacturer (you just have to email them...you don't even have to send the broken one back). Either of the manufacturers will probably send you 3 needles to replace the one.

I usually lose a needle or two before breaking them, but have snapped a couple in my time as well. I look forward to your report on the KnitPicks Harmony needles.

Don't feel bad - I am not a tight knitter either, and I break so many sock needles it's ridiculous.
I like my bamboo ones (although most of them are no longer straight!) Metal sock needles are fun too - tho' impossible to take on airplanes.

I never break needles, except Lantern Moons. I broke two of a set before I had finished half a sock with them, got them replaced, and broke the replacement needles too. Not good for needles that expensive. I just found them too stiff and brittle.
My favourite wooden needles are 2 mm Clover bamboos. I've had a set for years, not treating them at all nicely, and they have survived everything.

I loved wooden needles but got frustrated with the breaks, etc...and waiting for the replacements. I waited for 6 weeks for the new Harmony needle-circular size 1 from KnitPicks and while casting on one snapped! I am waiting for the metal replacement-love the other metal ones I have from them and will NEVER be tempted by a wooden one again! (most likely...)
