Actual Progress

It's always nice to see family, but when you aren't expecting them it throws me for a loop. My uncle was in town over the weekend and he stayed with us. We had a lot of fun, but I didn't really get much productive done. The good news is that because I've been working too many hours, I have today off (I have to flex my time rather than getting paid overtime)! An entire day to myself. I started the day off by sleeping in and now I'm drinking some tea and catching up on my blogging - again. Just as soon as I resolve to post to my blog every afternoon something happens and blogging goes by the wayside. Ok, enough whining. Sheesh.

We watched Shooter Saturday night and I took the opportunity to work on the very neglected Undulating Rib sock. The second one hasn't been getting a lot of action and I need to get it finished so I have time to send it off to my sister for her birthday on August 3rd. Translation - I need to get off my lazy butt and work on it. I managed to turn the heel and make some progress on the gusset during the movie and then I've worked on it a little bit more this week.

I've also been working on the muslin for the dress. I'm learning a lot about the way clothes are put together because this dress has been hard for me. Right now I'm working on getting the sleeves put it and thank goodness I have experience with set-in sleeves from knitting or I'd be lost. And thank goodness for my Vogue Sewing book or I'd be in a world of trouble. Fabric is not exactly like knitting. I'm easing the sleeves in and the basting makes it work pretty well.

My plan for today is to catch up on my blog reading (it's bad, I promise you) and work on my sewing for a little while. I'm sure I'll have to watch a little bit of television, so the sock will get some attention too. Have a great day.

what a wonderful day. gotta love flex time! looks like you're knee (or should I say arm) deep in straight pins - I used to use so many so the fabric wouldn't bunch or move at all! worked well, but provided me with many holes in my fingers!

You watched Shooter? How was it? I want to rent it.

Lately I've been thinking about learning to sew and wondering how "close" it is to knitting. A garment would be too intimidating for a beginner. What do you recommend to someone who can't cut straight?

A day off in the middle of the week is a treat! Hope you have a relaxing day.

Well, at least you aren't ripping back four rows of crochet edging like someone you know! Yes, basting and lots of pinning is the big part of getting a set-in sleeve to look good. There's also a trick in the way you feed the layers under the feed dogs...I think you do it so the ease part is on top and the whole thing curves over the arm. It also helps to have an "even feed" foot. I had one for quilting, but use it for slippery fabrics, uneven layers, etc. Can't wait to see this one! Nice sock.

I have the Vogue knitting book, which I love, would you recommend the Vogue Sewing book? Is it really basic or does it talk more about the construction of clothes? that's what I need, I know how to sew a straight line, etc but patterns often leave important steps out and I don't have a reference...

Sounds like a great way to spend your day off! Will you be at home the rest of the week as well?

The same day I read this post I had read another on sewing inset sleeves but had forgotten where. Today I found it! You might be interested in checking it out--www.BeSewStylish.taunton.com--July 19th post. Your black and white skirt is just beautiful, I'm sure your blouse will turn out very nicely too.
