Time For A Change
How was your weekend? Mine was nice, despite the cold weather. I got some crafting done and I baked up a storm. I haven't baked in a long time and I'd forgotten how relaxing it was and how satisfying. Aside from the baking I spun on Friday night - I finally finished spinning the coopworth and I'm going to try to ply it today. I'm anxious to see how it turns out and to move on to something else. I'd show you a picture, but it looks just like the last time I showed you a picture, with just more on the bobbin.
I also did some sewing last week. I joined Holiday Headstart and then promptly didn't do my January project. However, I did manage to finish the pajama pants by February 2nd, so I'm counting that as close enough.

Project Details:
Pattern: Wide-Leg Lounge Pants from Amy Butler's In Stitches
Fabric: Some blue cotton I bought last summer to use for a dress that never materialized. I had enough for the pants and my sister likes blue, so I thought I might as well use it.
Modifications: I didn't add the trim on the bottom because I didn't have any and my sister likes plain things so I wasn't too worried about it. Now that they're done, I'm glad I didn't add trim because the fabric is pretty busy and I think the trim would have been distracting. I also used ribbon for the drawstring rather than making a cord out of the fabric. I thought sewing the fabric into a 3/8" cord would be a major pain in the ass, but I also thought the ribbon looked nice and was easier to tie.

These pants were a simple project, but very cute in the end. I tried hard to make everything look really professional - I even finished the seams. Honestly, I wasn't sure about the Holiday Headstart thing, but now that I've done one project, I really see the wisdom. I'm already thinking about what I can do for February. I like those pants so much, everyone might be getting pajama pants for Christmas.
In life news, I've been holding out on you guys. As I'm sure you all know by now, I haven't been happy at my job for a long time. Things have been steadily getting worse, so a week ago was my last day. I had gotten to the point where I had a headache or stomach ache every day and I just decided that it was time to make a change. The kicker here is that while it is definitely time for that change, I don't have another job lined up - yet. That is causing me some stress. Ok, maybe more than some. But, I have a couple of options to consider and I'm keeping my ears open for a great opportunity. And in the meantime I'm taking advantage of my time off to read and craft and I'm probably going to tackle painting my bedroom in the next week or two. The really good news is that despite the stress of having to find a job, I feel so much better. It's like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm happier and enjoying the things that used to make me happy. So, if nothing else comes of this, those feelings make it all worth while. Have a happy Monday. I have knitting to share with you tomorrow.
P.S. Does anyone use Gimp? I'm trying to download it and I'm having a hard time (I keep getting an error message).

The pants are super cute! I bet those would be awesome in a light weight flannel too. One word of warning about the ribbon - I have a pair of pajama pants with a ribbon tie, and every time I wash them, the ribbon comes out unless I pin it to the waistband.
I'm so glad that you're feeling better - I just know that the perfect job opportunity will present itself to you. Hang in there! [[hugs!]]

Good for you! Life is much too short to hate your job so much that it makes you sick. It's good that you have some down time to put things into perspective instead of just jumping into another job.
The pants are really cute. The ribbon add the perfect "girlie" touch that icord just wouldn't add.

I wondered why you didn't seem to be at work. You're smart to just get away before the job takes away your health. It's hard to put up with suckage on the job. It should be easier to find a job you like while you're free, too. Good luck!!
The pants are super cute.

Congratulations on such a big step! I'm wishing you the best... and enjoy your time off :)

I'm glad to hear you're making a change at work, I know you had been really miserable there. At least now you are forced to get out there and find something new, rahtern than just sticking with what you know, even when its giving you an ulcer. Good luck!

congrats on freeing yourself from the job - I'm sure it took a lot of courage to walk away without having something lined up, but in the end it HAS to be better than trying to make yourself go to a job that is making you physically ill.
Plus, think of how nice it'll be for the next few cold mornings to be able to avoid the trek to the office...
congrats again! :)

I'm so glad that you feel better about your situation now. The pajama pants aer wonderful and I sincerely wish I could find a place to take sewing lessons now. :)

The pants look great! I love the color. Also, congrats on quitting your job. Sounds weird to say that but I'm sure you will not regret your decision.

I love the PJ pants. But I agree with the other commenter that ribbon is slippery and a knot or bow may become untied too easily.
A fabric tie could be made easily by folding a long strip in half,length-wise, right sides together and sewing the raw edges together length-wise. Then the tricky part would be to turn that long tube inside-out so the right sides of the fabric are on the outside. There is a tool that you can get that makes it so easy. Mine is called Fasturn. I usually don't like to acquire tools that only have one purpose but my Fasturn set is worth its weight in gold and has saved me so much 'turning' time. Just Google 'fasturn' with one 't' and you'll find it. It might be worth it 'specially if you plan on making more of those pants.
Congratulations on ditching a job that made you unhappy. Life is too short to be miserable over a job.

that's great - it takes guts to walk away when there is nothing lined up. stress and stomach aches aren't worth it! relax a little and enjoy the time off! I'm sure all the critters enjoy having you home!
ps - the pj pants are great! i know my whole family would wear them!

It's about time you came clean. ;-)

Congratulations on quitting your job. I know, it IS kind of stressful, but it sounds like you really made the right decision. Good luck with finding something that you enjoy. Now you'll have time for Butterfly, right?

Agreed; I think the current expression (=I'm already outdated) is "you go, girl". That job was destroying your soul. I share the joy and congratulations. You're not going to starve, you're not going to be homeless, you're going to be (and are) better.
Posted by: Judith at February 5, 2007 11:51 AM
I've tried using gimp too, but with no success... There's got to be an easier way :-)
Posted by: Amy at February 5, 2007 11:54 AM
I'm sure you will find another job soon. Probably too soon! Enjoy your time off.
The pants look great- very professional.

Steph, I'll think good thoughts for you as you brainstorm your next move. I've been reading your blog for 2 years now, and I can say with full confidence that you're creative, energetic, and a genuinely nice person - you will find your niche in time, no worries.

Well, you've been expressing that you're unhappy for awhile. If it got to the point that you're it affects your health, definitely not the place to be. I'm sure that some thing even more wonderful will come along and I'm glad that you're able to leave the job if it made you that unhappy. Good luck on the job hunt. The pajama pants are very cute too.

If you feel that kind of relief, you did the right thing! Enjoy your sabbatical! As for the tie on the jammies, I make fabric "strings" for tote bags by cutting a long strip, turning under each end and pressing, then pressing the strip in half longwise with edges meeting in the middle. Then press in half again and topstitch. The pj's are adorable and will be a nice addition to HH.

Beautiful PJs - great fabric choice.
Re ribbon slipping: I just looked at the ones I'm wearing and they've attached the ribbon onto each side of the cord so that only the ribbon ends come through to the front.

I'm glad to hear you quit your job - it takes guts. As someone wise once said, we only live once and life is so short. Enjoy your time - try not to stress - whatever is meant to be will come your way and it will only be an improvement. Wow - with that weight off your shoulders your creativity should really come out!

congratulations on quitting work! i know how stressed you were and how you just wanted to be out of there. it's a good thing! even if you don't have anything lined up as of yet :) just think of it as a little unpaid vacation!
love the PJ pants. they look extremely comfortable.

I am a "recovering" lawyer myself and my life got SO MUCH better after I switched careers so you go girl! Have fun crafting, baking and figuring out the next step -- it'll be great.

I know I already said this to you, but what you did *really* took a lot of guts. You should definitely be proud of yourself for being courageous. Not all of us can be so brave about facing the unknown, and I really admire you for your big step. You have so much to offer -- amazing talents and such a warm personality. I hope you enjoy the break from work.

Congratulations are making a positive decision for yourself. I'm so happy/proud for you. Your so talented I'm sure the perfect opportunity will present itself to you in due time. Until then, enjoy some time to yourself, as you say you are doing.
Great pants!
I didn't get to spin Friday night, I just wasn't up to it. Well I had plying to do and really that was what I wasn't up to. spinning I could have handled, but plying my 3 together just was to mentally taxing for some reason.

congrats on the work change!! I hope you enjoy this time off (with lots of knitting and crafting!) and that you find the next step when the time is right :-)

Good for your for recognizing a bad work place for you and getting out! Keep up the good spirits and the right thing will be there at the right time.
Meanwhile - great pants, I think one for everyone in the family sounds like a great idea!

Trust me, you'll never look back.

Those pj pants look pretty good - the holiday headstart sounds like an excellent idea!
I use the Gimp on Mac - I downloaded it from http://www.macgimp.org. You need to have X11 installed to use it, but I haven't had any issues with it (except for the crappy interface, but there's not much you can do about that!).

Congratulations! I, too, just made a large and difficult life decision (mine involves a move). Although I wish I didn't have to go, now that I've made the decision, I feel leaps and bounds better. Take this time to relax, reconnect, and find what you love.
p.s. the pajama pants are awesome! and getting a headstart on the holidays is a brilliant idea. before i do that, i guess i'd better finish up last my presents from LAST christmas!
Posted by: jennie at February 5, 2007 10:44 PM
good for you! enjoy your time off and good luck with everything.
hmm, i will have to work on getting onto your xmas pj pants list! ;-)

love the jammies! are they for you? or a gift? if they are for you, wear them and enjoy!
congrats on making a difficult and brave decision. i always congratulate people who leave jobs that made them unhappy, even though it is scary. things have a funny way of working out and i am sure in time you will see. good luck, and keep us informed! and enjoy the much deserved time off!

Again, good riddance my dear.. that weight off your shoulders is the BEST stress relief ever. It's all about being as happy as you can =)
Posted by: yaiAnn at February 6, 2007 10:21 AM
Those pants are adorable -- I just saw Amy Butler's book at the store the other day and I'm thinking of getting it as a gift for my mom. All the projects look so cute.
Posted by: Sarah at February 6, 2007 11:53 AM
Good luck with the change - if it feels right, it probably is. And think of how ahead you can get on your Christmas shopping!

Yeah! Go Stephanie, Go Stephanie! I remember the shear panic I felt when I quite my job to go back to school, just be patient and something will present itself...
Posted by: Heidi at February 6, 2007 6:31 PM
How incredibly brave! I love your blog - I've been an anonymous reader for quite some time and finally decided to come out of the closet. :)
Posted by: Meredith at February 6, 2007 10:07 PM
Great pants, they look like they will be so comfy and touchable.
You definitely took the right step by leaving your job. It's not worth it when it gives you that much grief. I think it's good to have a little time in between gigs, too. It will help you get all of the bad energy out of your system.
I use the Gimp at work, so our tech guys installed it for me. I can't give much advice in how to get it going, but it's pretty good once it's up.
Posted by: Jenna at February 7, 2007 11:00 AM
Wow, I'm just catching up now, and congratulations!! It's such a big decision and the courage for you to bite the bullet and say this is not what you want your life to be, well, that's just really awesome.
I hope in the past week you've been decompressing from your old hated job, and I'm looking forward to hearing how things go for you, as they unfold in their own time :)
