Apple Turnovers

I hope you all had a lovely holiday weekend. Things were pleasantly quiet around here and I managed to accomplish a few things. I spun on Friday night and my alpaca spinning techniques need some work. It's pretty slippery stuff and I haven't mastered the best way to spin it, but I'm going to have a lot of time to practice because I have a basket full of fiber. I imagine I'll be spinning this alpaca for months to come. I hope I have it figured out by the time I get done.

Saturday afternoon seemed like a good time to try to bake some apple turnovers. I tried these once before (although with a different recipe) and they were less than stellar. However, I had some apples that needed to be used up and so I thought I'd try again. This time the recipe was from my favorite baking book - How To Bake. The recipe uses quick puff pastry (my first try at this) and has you cook the apple filling before you bake the turnovers. I added icing rather than just dusting with powdered sugar because Travis thinks everything is better with frosting.

I am really happy with how these turned out. The pastry is light and flaky (not tough and chewy like my last attempt) and the filling is sweet and a little spicy. The recipe made 6 (with apple left over) and they lasted for a day and a half. I will definitely be making these again.

I am this close (imagine me holding my thumb and index finger about 1 1/2 inches apart) to finishing the second knee high - I can't wait. I'll have those pictures for you just as soon and I can get it done. These suckers have taken forever, but I hope they're worth it in the end. Have a great Tuesday that is a Monday. Happy knitting.

YUM!! I've been spinning superwash which is very slippery, too. Erin (Mama E) told me to wrap the single around the slide one more time to slow down the take up. I just wrapped it around the bottom where the pinch clamp is and it worked out well.

oh my god, those turnovers look evil. this is why i don't bake at home :)

Oh, that is so not fair. I'm sitting here this morning drinking my coffee, having not eaten, and not having anything close to that good looking to eat in my kitchen. You are cruel.

Mmmm, you're making me drool! Those look so delicious...

those turnovers look so good... my stomach is growling. And Travis is right - everything IS better with frosting. I think I need to include some baking in my life!

That's just mean...between Lent and the diet I need to go on before our trip to Santa Fe, those turnover photos were downright "friend abuse". Boo. (I may have an article or two in old SpinOffs on the alpaca dilemma..let me look, even though you don't deserve it after the Turnover Torture incident.)

Mmmm. My Raisin Bran just doesn't compare.

Oh, those look so yummy! Now I'm craving granny smith apples and my poor nectarine doesn't look half as good. lol

Man, those look sooooo good.
I just put the book on hold at the library. :)

Ooooh, the turnovers look sooooo delicious!! I'll have to check out that recipe in my book. And Travis is right -- everything is better with frosting. In fact, sometimes frosting all by itself (with nothing else) is the best. =) Yummm....

mmmm - what isn't better with frosting? :) can't wait to see the knee-highs!!

Posted by: stacey at February 20, 2007 10:59 AM

will you let me know a few days in advance before you make them next time? just so i can book my flight over?

Posted by: kris at February 20, 2007 11:30 AM

I agree with Travis. Powdered sugar is so messy, too. Bleh.

Yum!!! Will I beat you? I'm just about done with my knee highs and just have to cast off. But I have a feeling, by the time I've actually finished and posted them, you'd have beat me to it by 2 weeks! ;)

Posted by: yaiAnn at February 20, 2007 12:57 PM

I admire you for sticking with the knee highs... I gave up and went for shorter socks, but then I don't have your long, lanky legs to show them off.

Wow, they lasted a day and a half, they would have been gone in 10 minutes in my house (with just me at home as well!!)

Yummy! Apple turnovers! Sounds delicious. Looks like I have a new idea on what to make with those Granny Smiths sitting on the kitchen counter! :)

Nice work! They look terrific, Yum.

Those turnovers look really good! They make me want to bake something. I don't think I will be leaving to go to the store today though since we are in the middle of a massive winter storm. Sigh.

I wanted to let you know that I think you and your new camera are taking beautiful pictures! I am hoping to have a little extra money this summer due to an accounting class I will be teaching and would like to buy a camera to improve my quality of pictures.
