Mid-Calf

The knee high is creeping up to about mid-calf. Right now I have 7.5 inches and I need to knit until I have about 14 (and hopefully I won't run out of yarn before I get there), then I'll add the ribbing in the solid blue.

I just finished the 4th set of increases, and the pattern calls for 8 - so, really on track for the 14", assuming the yarn holds (can you tell I'm worried about that?)

I've been knitting these socks on 2.0mm Susan Bates needles, as recommended by Grumperina. I have to tell you - I love them. They're a little long - 7 inches rather than 6, but the good outweighs the bad. The points are wonderful, the coating on the metal is perfect for socks - the needles are nice and strong, but not too slick, and they're cheap! I bought the socks needle set at the LYS (the set is 4 pairs of needles - 000, 00, 0, and 1) for $10!

The only other news is my new cell phone. I have had a long term hate relationship with the previous phone and yesterday was the first day I was eligible for a new phone. So, over lunch I ran right down to Circuit City and set myself up with a new version.

Picking out a cell phone is hard. There are so many, and 90% are flip phones (which I have a personal aversion to). That left me just a couple of choices. I considered a blackberry or palm, but I know I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost of all those bells and whistles. This one actually has an MP3 player, which I won't use because of my iPod, but other than that - I really like it. I can't figure out how to get the bluetooth headset to work - I either have it on when I don't want it on or it's off when I want it on. I hope I'll get it figured out today, but man this technology makes my head hurt.

I was making a cardigan for my son and spent the whole time fretting about running out of yarn. The funny thing is that I absolutely knew that I didn't have enough yarn when I started out, but this little daredevil streak kicked in and I had to see if I could make it work. I realized about 3/4 of the way through that I didn't want to be a daredevil anymore because it was a bit too stressful!

Before I started doing socks on Magic loop, I picked up that set at JoAnn's with a 40% off coupon which made them extra cheap!

The socks are looking great - you could always weigh the sock and how much yarn you have left to see how you are progressing as far as using it up....harder with knee socks though because they get wider! I do love the colors though...they remind me of your banner!

The socks are really cool. It will take staminy to get to the 14" but I know you can do it.

The phone LOOKS complicated. The sock looks great and I might need to get a set of the needles!

The socks are very cute, they are going to look great on your legs, and very practical too considering your months of cold weather.

Okay, how the heck do you dial the phone?

I have those same needles, quite the bargain for the price! And they are pretty comfortable to work with, although I agree a bit to long for my ideal tastes.

i'm loving the socks! are you using a self-striping yarn? or are you switching colors back and forth?

those cute little sock needles look brilliant....and yes, oh so cheap!

i'm with you on the mobile phone. i struggle to pick a new one everytime mine bites the bullet...and then it takes me weeks to stop pressing the wrong buttons.

Cool socks! I like the Susan Bates needles too. I was so excited when Grumperina first mentioned they were her needle of choice. I thought this proved I truly was part of the knitting club.

I wish they'd make a phone with numbers bigger than the head of a pin.

the sock is looking good. I hope that yarn lasts for you too...but if not, you can do a longer cuff in the solid blue, right?
fancy schmancy phone!

So, you are telling me I can come out of the closet now with all my old Susan Bates and Inox coated needles?! Great socks. The headset? I don't care for hubby's...it has not improved his hearing and he tends to shout when wearing it!

I got talked into a flip phone last time I bought one, and it was a mistake. Next time, I'm really going back to the candy bar phone.

Love the knee highs! Love them. How often are you increasing? How many stitches?

Posted by: Cindy at November 10, 2006 7:22 AM

the knee highs are coming along great - we're all keeping our finger's crossed for you about the yarn-
That phone looks amazingly high-tech to me. and I always have wondered how the blue tooth thingy's worked. cool but a bit beyond my non-techie ability.

And, Sundara blogged about those fabulous kimono sweaters today that you test knit - they're gorgeous. Nice job.

Sundara posted the kimono pattern today. Did you test knit a size that fits you? How does it look?

Oh yes, I love my Bates Silvalumes. I've even started giving them as presents to my friends! So slinky smooth. It bothers me the way that extra inch of metal seems to always be poking at my wrist, but really, you're right - it's worth the tradeoff. And the best part is despite the slinkiness, I haven't had any needles leap free of my stitches! Knock wood, right?
