A New Heel

I know I've said it before, but after yesterday it bears repeating. Knitting and blogging friends are the best. Thanks for helping me out of my funk. Between all the lovely comments and some serious chocolate (dark chocolate truffles), plus some knitting, tv watching, and puppy snuggles I'm feeling much better.

The sock has made a turn - a heel turn to be precise.

I kind of fumbled my way through the solid color heel and played around with a couple of ways to pick up the wraps on the short-rows. I used the tutorial from Misocrafty for the toe, but I wanted to compare it to the method where you pick up and knit (or purl) the wraps with the stitch (like Wendy explains). I'm getting holes (tiny ones, but they're there) with both methods and I'm not sure why. Maybe one of you short-row experts can help me with this one. Even with the tiny holes, I have a completely lovely sock and now I need to work about 4 inches of the leg before I start the calf increases. I can't wait.

yahoooo for heel turns! The sock will start to go buy faster than you know it.. unless you've got fat calves like me. Anyways, I still kind of get the holes too.. I'm not sure why either. but please share any tips you get!

I'm glad today is going better!

And, short rows? I hate like the dickens to try to pick up the wraps, especially on the purl-side, and so I use the YO method instead. It works about the same, but everything is already on the needle . . . if that makes sense!

The sock looks great! I'm short row averse so I can not help:-(

I get teeny tiny little holes with mine also sometimes - the only time I haven't is when I used the PGR method (in the Falling Leaves pattern in Knitty) - any other way, it seems like I have holes when I stretch them.

It should go fast now - just straight knitting with some increases!

(yay for puppy cuddlies - those are the BEST mood upper!)

I love how the stripes look drawn on...so cute!

umm, I dunno I stopped getting holes with the miso way (that was my "heel" in the pic)

The sock is looking good!

I get teeny tiny holes when I do short rows too, I think it's just part of the process. I like Misocrafty's method too, cause before I used that one, I got huge holes that you could stick a pinky in. Now the holes are hard to see, and I think they're just more a result of the stitches turning almost 90 degrees and going the other direction.

No short row heels for me so I'm not help. But I'm sure the advice you're getting from others is good.

Well I can't help you, but I can tell you I can't make a short row without a hole, no matter how many tricks and tips I read, have demonstrated, etc, to save my life! But I think after a few washings, they always close up a bit.

The sock looks great, though, I love the stripes.

Glad you are in a better mood!

I love that yarn. I have ordered some in a different colorway and keep checking the mail anxiously. It looks luscious.

Let me take this opportunity to warn you away from short-row heels. Heel flaps are the way go!

Hey the socks look great. I'm not sure if you've already said but what yarn is it? I'm posting the first time here so this question is a bit outdated but, by the way, where did you go in Oklahoma--just asking because that's where I'm from!

I hope you got some short-row help! I am a heel flap girl myself, even though I offered those short-row tutorials for Socktoberfest ;)

I love the colors in that sock!

Oh my word! I knitted nearly identical socks this summer for my little brother (age 4)! http://www.xanga.com/gingerandtwinkle/538612056/item.html
:-) That's so funny! They're beautiful, no?

i'm under the impression that tiny holes are unavoidable with short rows. even when i look at my store bought socks, the transitions aren't perfect. i think that it's just the nature of the beast.

Chocolate always helps. That is a nice-looking proto-sock. Its amazing to see how far your knitting skills have come in such a short time!

Lovely, lovely knee highs. I always get holes in my short row heels. Damn.

Posted by: diana at November 3, 2006 12:38 PM

v. nice striping! is that self-striping yarn, or are you using two colors?
I am glad you are feeling better....having the blues is the pits.

The sock looks great. I don't have any advice on short row heels. I always use the wrap method, and have never had a problem with holes. Don't get me started on what a pain in the rear it is to pick up the wraps though!!

Have a great weekend!

The heel looks great! And you're right, knitting friends are wonderful. Hope you have a great weekend!

that is one seriously beautiful sock.
I have not yet done a toe up, so alas, no input for you.

have you tried the yarn-over method a la Purlwise's Tutorial?

Its the only short row way that I've done that hasn't given me holes. I dont have the link, but you can google "short row heel" and Purlwise, or check the link on my post that I did for the Sundara Chimney Socks.

Great color!

I've tried PGR's method explained at Purlwise's site and I ended up with holes that showed when the sock was on. I've used Sherman Heel a few times with great success (no wraps, uses knit and purl encroachment to close the holes -- super easy!) I found the instructions at the Hipknitism site. The various links are in my post here: http://kalliopelane.com/blog/?p=88

Good luck!
