I Wanna Talk About Socks*
Socks, socks, socks, socks.
Lolly is hard at work making this installment of Socktoberfest another huge success. Yesterday she posted some questions about socks and since I'm a little lacking in the knitting progress department, I thought I'd do a little q&a.
When did you start making socks?
I started making socks in March of 2005. I looked at the information on Knitter's Review and my knitting books, bought some yarn and a set of dpns and figured it out.
What was your first pair? How have they held up over time?
My first pair of socks were made with Koigu and I used a Koigu pattern. The socks were too big for me, so I gave them to my sister (she has bigger feet than I do) and she says they're good.
What would you have done differently?
I would have used smaller needles - I think I used US 2's and I wasn't happy with the stitches and fit, but I really was happy with the socks in general.
What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?
My favorite sock yarn is Sundara Sock Yarn - she has great colors and a really nice superwash sock yarn. Other favorites are Sunshine Yarns, Sweet Georgia, Lorna's Laces, and I have some Yarntini I can't wait to try and some Piece of Beauty striping for knee socks.
Do you like to crochet your socks? Or knit them on dpns, 2 circulars, or magic loop?
My crochet skills are limited to finishing the edge on my knitting, so I don't think I could crochet socks. I've tried all methods of knitting socks and I see a benefit to each method. That said, my favorite is 5 dpns - holding the stitches on 4 needles and using the 5th to knit. I like the tradition of knitting socks with dpns. My current needles of choice are the Addi Natura 6" dpns, but I recently purchased a set on 2.5mm Holz & Stein needles that are 7" and I can't wait to try them.
Which kind of heel do you prefer?
I like 'em all. I like short-rows (especially now that I finally figured out what I was doing wrong - thanks Joelene) for toe-up socks, but I prefer a heel flap on a top down sock. I don't know why, but nobody said I had to make sense.
How many pairs have you made?
Not as many as I wish I'd made. Let me see ... looks like 8 pairs, plus the ones in progress right now.
*Bonus points for those of you who can guess the song and artist I stole the title from (I obviously changed it just a bit - we don't want it to be too easy).

I know, I know! But, really, isn't this a family friendly blog?

Reminds me of "I wanna talk about ME!" by Toby Keith. Just kind of bold and in your face. lol

If it's SnP... isn't it "Let's talk about...."?

Sometimes our age difference is blatantly apparent. As in this song choice. :-)

Wanna talk about SOCKS, baby, wanna talk about you and me, wanna talk about all the good things and the bad things that can be!

I'm going with SnP, although I didn't think about Toby Keith.
You know, I had an uncontrollable urge to hum this song to myself all the time during recess when it was popular (I think we're about the same age -- does that sound right?). Man, it was so embarrassing, because I was young enough that saying such a sentence was yucky and humiliating. But it was just so catchy!

Didn't you, at one time, knit 2 socks at a time on 2 circulars? I thought you sent me the tutorial link on that. I'm wanting to take a class on that method. I like socks on smaller needles too. I have no clue on the song.

Thanks for answering the questions, Steph! I really want to try Joelene's method... looks great!
