A Pair of Hearts

This weekend was surprisingly productive. Well, maybe not surprising because I didn't leave my house all weekend. Travis said it was scary that I was more of a home body than he was, and he has a point. But, it was nice to spend some time at home after the craziness of last weekend. You'll all be so relieved to know that I have finished the kimono sweater! That's the good news, the bad news is that I don't have pictures for you yet, but as soon as I hear back from Sundara, I'll let you know where we stand on that. I also made good progress on the wedding square for Cindy. I'm officially half done, but I should finish it this week.

It's called Heart Strings and it's from the 3rd Barbara Walker stitch book (the yellow one). It's a little smaller than the required 8 inches, but I have it on good authority that the yarn grows when washed, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on it working out to be the right size. Sure, I could have knit a swatch and blocked it, but it's cables, so swatches lie. I'm winging it and hoping for the best.

The other thing I started this weekend were the knee highs.

I wasn't sure how much of the toe should be the solid and I did too much the first time. I ended up going with 1.5 inches, which is basically the short-row toe, and then I switched to the striping yarn. That is one great thing about toe up socks - you can try them on as you go and see how things are working.

This week should be pretty quiet. We're going to visit my dad and stepmom Friday, so it will be a short week. I have a few things to do at work, but nothing outrageous. I've been thinking about painting my bedroom dark brown - like chocolate brown. Anyone have any thoughts on that? I'd do the walls dark and then use cream or off-white on the bed and maybe a print with brown and white/off-white on the windows and pillows.

Hurray for productive weekends! That sock looks great! The stitches look so perfect! Is the yarn striping or are you striping it?

I have a dark brown room in my house (family room) and it's great. The woodwork really (built in bookcases and trim)pops. As long as you have enough other stuff to break it up it shouldn't feel closed in, just rich and cozy. I have mostly deeper, rich colors in the entire house, but my favorite is the brown. It's a Benjamin Moore color, from their historic colors collection. The historic colors are all kind of mucky, saturated and not clear. I love them.

Brown is lovely for sure. Darker colors tend to make a room look a little smaller though, which is never really an extreme issue - just something you should know before you jump into that color. Beautiful socks by the way!

I think the Brown with cream accents sounds nice. I love strong contrast. When I was about 10, my best friend had her room painted navy blue (one wall was wallpapered navy with tiny white polks dots) and then the carpet and bedspreads were white with white eyelet pillows and furniture. It impressed me so much that I still remember it now - more than 2 dozen years later.

Love the square. And the socks. I keep thinking that knee highs would be so much fun, especially ones with stripes, but then I wonder how long it would take me to knit them... Also, I like the idea of chocolate brown in the bedroom. Nice and cozy. Plus, lots of colors go with brown so you certainly have lots of options as far as your accents go.

Nice to hear you stayed home all weekend! I love doing that every once and a while....

The knee socks are looking great - toe up is really the way to go for those! I love the solid toe option...

I'd go for the chocolate brown! It would be so warm and cozy looking - and the cream sheets, etc would brighten it up!

Don't you just love quiet weeks where you can relax some and not feel like your head will explode? Nice socks!

Brown with baby blue - like your blog - is so classic. As is that afghan square. But what's with the knee highs taking over blogland? I'm so perplexed.

Posted by: Theresa at October 30, 2006 10:10 AM

ooooh, knee highs! i soooo want to make some but keep putting them off :( too many other things in the queue.

Posted by: gleek at October 30, 2006 10:27 AM

The square looks nice, it'll definitely block out to 8 inches I imagine.

Cute socks.

Dark brown and creme sounds really nice, however very dark. Is your room big?

Congrats on finishing the kimono sweater. I can't wait to see the photos. I love those socks!

oooo the pob yarn is knitting up so pretty!!

and of course Im going to vote yes on a chocolate brown bedroom

On you the knee-highs will look great. On me, with one calf half the size of the other, um, not so much! I think that ship has sailed! As for the brown bedroom, maybe. I'm seeing brown with silver blue in some of the decorating mags, but our rooms are too small here to pull it off. The other thing to keep in mind is that, even with a tinted primer, you will need two-three coats to have it look right. How much do you like to paint?!

The knee highs are looking great!

We have a darker brown (not quite chocolate) on the walls in our bedroom. It's even a small bedroom (room for one nightstand, one queen size bed, a chair and a small bookcase, no dressers etc.) and we really like it. Our duvet cover in the winter looks watercolored and block printed with the background being shades of brown/caramel and the printing in cranberry and eggplant. In the summer we lighten it up with cream or light blue. But we like it a lot.

i like the bedroom idea! what colour is the floor? now in my mind you live in the cutest timber cottage with whitewashed floors.

no wonder i didn't see you this weekend - i didn't leave my house either ;-)

i love the idea of dark brown walls...but i am rather fond of the colour chocolate, so may not be the best person to ask.

obviously you need to get out more! how about next weekend we meet for coffee, cake and a spot of knitting?

First off, the socks are brilliant. I quite like those colors together. Perfect for knee socks, Steph ;)
I love chocolate brown. I really have been into it lately, so I think it would be a perfect wall color. Sounds like a nice plan you have there!

What happened to the cookie contest?

Posted by: Rita at October 30, 2006 4:25 PM

the paint idea sounds interesting...i think with enough natural light, and if the room is a good size it could work. i guess i would keep a lot of light/cream colored accents going to reduce any chances of the room being "dreary."

Look at that beautiful sock! Love it :) Yum, Chocolate brown! We have a color called Harvest Brown in our bedroom... its the least bright room in the house, so its a good medium, rich shade. I'd say go for the Chocolate if you have enough light! We have all sage greenish colored bedding, so the brown goes really well! Have a happy halloween :)

Posted by: Dani at October 30, 2006 5:18 PM

Chocolate brown, definitely. I mean, it's chocolate!

I think your idea for redecorating your bedroom sounds great! I have been kicking around some ideas in my head, but I've got to do the practical home improvement projects first! =(

Posted by: Zarah at October 31, 2006 9:12 AM

What does Travis think of that? Personally, I'd like it.

Posted by: claudia at October 31, 2006 9:51 AM

It all looks great. I think your plan for the bedroom sounds very nice and tranquil.

I have a chocolate brown room, my office/craft room, and I love it. It's a Ralph lauren color called Desert Boot and we used an almost black primer under it. It's from the Thoroughbred collection (http://rlhome.polo.com/rlhome/products/paint/items.asp?haid=48&f=lp&start=0) You can by small samples online for $4. We also got an eggshell finish because I wanted the color to be like a dark chocolate candy bar, you know how they have a slight shine to them? Any whoooo we had about 8 samples on the wall at once because it was hard to find the right color! Our accents are crisp white and the room feels cosy and welcoming. Have fun!

the aphgan square is fabulous -
and the socks... well, suffice it to say that I am now dreaming of knee highs as well.:-) Great inspiration ! They have gotten off to a great start!

Hi! New poster here...
Love the toe-up striped socks. I have to try my hand at toe-ups!
My guest room is chocolate brown (think of what fun it would be to paint with what looks like a melted Hershey's bar) and everyone seems to love it. I have done the dressers and other pieces of hand-me-down furniture in ivory to offset it, and it worked beautifully. I hope you go for it!
