Questions
I'm still knitting away on my latest sweater. I now have an amazing 11 inches of the 20.5 I need for the sleeves. So, that's only about 4 inches of progress in as many days. I do believe I'd better get my butt in gear if this puppy's gonna be finished on time. I think I'm going to squealing in to the finish at the very last second. Procrastination strikes again.
The backordered handles I wanted for the Noni bag are finally on their way to me. Trust me, they're gonna be worth the wait. I might try to get that project finished this weekend. Or at least get started on finishing it. We'll see how it goes because I'm going to have to dedicate some serious time to the sleeve knitting!
Now for the questions. I'm looking for the "perfect" knitting bag and I want your opinions. If you have found the bag, do tell. If you're still looking, what are the necessary ingredients and what is missing from the bags on the market. I'm just doing an informal little poll of all you gurus out there. Personally, I ideally need a knitting bag that I can put inside my large work tote because by the time I have the work tote, lunch bag, and purse I really am out of hands and patience to carry something else. But, then there's the problem of the weekends when I'm going to knit with a friend or going to the doctor's office and I don't have the ginormous work tote. So, I want a bag that I can carry on its own too. I'm a big fan of a well-organized bag - pockets are a good thing, but not too many pockets because then they just take up space and annoy me. Oh, and just to make life really interesting, I want a bag that can fit a sock or some lace or a piece of a sweater. I don't ask for much, do I. Let's see... I have a Zelda Grande, a Namaste Jetsetter (scroll down a bit), a Lantern Moon Palm Leaf Tote, and a couple of random bags that I've pressed into service (like the one I made a week or so ago). All of them are lovely bags, but none of them are it. Although, I do use the Lantern Moon the most - when I'm taking my knitting and a book and camera - so it is useful for that kind of thing. So, tell me what you think makes a perfect knitting bag. I can't wait to hear from you.

This is such a hard question. Something that works for you may not work for me, etc. I have several bags that fit inside my large work tote. As you say, few have 'it all'. It must close with a zipper or pull string, must hold a smallish project, pockets are totally necessary as adding a notion bag is easier and more useful than pockets. Here is one style I really like.

Good luck!

Geez. I just grab whatever book bag is handy and off I go. And there's always room in my pocketbook for whatever sock I'm working on.

I think the next time I knit a sweater I am going to start with the boring sleeves, then maybe the back and leave the front for last. Usually the front has a little more interest. I loose interest too quickly with sleeves!!!

Hmmm, perfect knitting bag. Although I have about 15 bags, I haven't found the perfect one yet. The closest I've come is a diaper bag my mother-in-law gave me. But I have one major complaint about it, the velcro closures, it tends to snag yarn.

I'm no help, I use a clear ziploc bag for my knitting. Unattractive, but useful.

I am definitely a bag lady. I must have over a dozen, and haven't found the right one yet. Maybe it's like the Holy Grail! It's the quest that counts :)

For travel and for classes, I found a great craft/knitting backpack at Halcyon Yarn..check their catalogue. Now, it's not going to fit inside anything, but I think it's good for some purposes. Have you checked out the Knit Picks KIPer bags? I might just have to order the set of those! Otherwise, I use a big, quilted, reversible tote that I made several years ago. Amy Butler has a craft tote pattern.....

I don't really carry around my knitting with me so I don't have a knitting bag, per se. But I do have a square denim tote that I use to hold my knitting when I'm riding in a car. I like it because it has a single snap button closure (no velcro, zipper, flaps, etc.) which allows me to keep it closed but still be able to knit with the working yarn inside of it. And it's denim, so it doesn't dirty very easily!

Depending on what project - I have a small "freebie" cosmetic zip up bag that holds a skein of sock yarn perfectly, and it's small enough to carry alone to the dr's office, etc. or fit in my messenger bag to take to work for lunch knitting. I don't usually carry around bigger projects as they are too cumbersome - when I do take them for a weekend, etc, I usually stick them in a zip top handled bag I have. All my notions are in a seperate little pouch I can throw in. (my sock bag has it's own notions in it that stay with the sock bag - I can't be bothered switching them around!)

The perfect knitting bag, to me, has the following characteristics.
-- No velcro or zippers to catch fibers on.
-- Roomy enough to hold a light sweater in progress.
-- A long enough shoulder strap to go over my right shoulder and over my head, so the bag stays secure hands-free while I knit standing up.
-- A very small interior pocket for stitch markers. Other interior pockets for needles, keys, cell phone, are nice too.
-- A large enough pocket somewhere for the pattern to sit without getting crumpled (ideally fits an Interweave Knits issue flat)
.... The bag I found that fits these requirements? Mine is from Mackerilla Design (www.mackerilladesign.com). I found the "Project Handbag" at the Stitches West marketplace. At first I thought it was expensive but my shopping facilitator goaded me into buying it. I'm so happy I did.

i have a tote bag from vera bradley that i like to use as a knitting bag. it's large enough for magazines, projects, etc. there are a lot of inside pockets, and there are several different styles and colors of bags to choose from. the bags have a quilted look to them, and the colors incorporated into the designs are conspicuous. it'd be easy to identify. however, one thing i find i'm wary about using this as a knitting bag is that i don't like to just put it anywhere; i don't want it to get dirty because it's recommended that these bags are spot-cleaned. that may just be a good thing; i'll be conscious of where it is at all times.
