Calling All Bakers

My office always does a big United Way fundraising campaign and this year one of the items on the agenda is a cookie bake-off. The girls in charge of the thing this year wanted guaranteed participants, and of course I said I'd bake cookies (combine the fact that I'm weak and it's a good cause and bam, I'm baking cookies). There are 3 categories: chocolate chip, bars, and other. I bake a lot of cookies (and sometimes I even remember to take pictures of them) for the dear husband - he does love his cookies. But, I have yet to find the "ultimate" chocolate chip cookie recipe and this seemed like a good excuse to expand the search. Do you have one? Do you want to share or point me to the cookbook it's in? The bake-off is mid-October and I'd better start trying some recipes.

I think a contest might be in order. Here's the plan: if you submit a recipe, I'll put your name in the hat and draw a random winner for some yarn. Then, if I choose to bake the recipe you submit for the bake-off, you get an extra prize - we'll chat about what that might be because I do like to give prizes that the recipient is excited about. I think recipes should be submitted by the 25th (so I have time to try them all and sooner is always better than later) and since we're talking recipes here you can e-mail them to me at smarquiss AT wyoming DOT com rather than leave them in the comments, but the comments are fine if that works for you.

It took me years to find the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe and I wanted to be able to bake ones that looked like what you saw in a magazine. There is a recipe, actually three recipes, on Martha Stewarts website. All three use the same ingredients just in different ratios. There is cakey choc. chip, soft and chewy choc. chip, and thin and crisp choc. chip. We prefer the cakey ones and when baked they look like they should be in a magazine spread. I use an ice cream scoop so they are all the same.

I just saw a cookie called "chewbacca chewies", just looked like a very simple sugar cookie with a Kraft caramel pushed in the center....after baking it melted all over the top. I just googled the name and found the recipe. I would say any hubby would be glad to test the recipe for you!!!

I already emailed my recipe, but I wanted to point out that Alton Brown has a fab episode of Good Eats where he covers chocolate chip cookies (like how to make chewy, cakey, crispy, and so on) Not sure if its on the foodtv site, but its a very good primer in making the right choc. chip cookie :)

Boy oh boy does slice and bake count as a recipe? I actually have 2 recipes that are delicious but they are more than just chocolate chip cookies. One is a pumpkin chocolate chip and one is an ultimate cookie and just happens to have chocolate chips in it. Would this be too much? Also, I'm a fan of the recipe on the package of Nestle Toll House chocolate chips.

I've never had a choc-chip cooky that I liked better than the recipe (the Original Toll House recipe) on the package. Except when I substituted pecans for the walnuts. Now, if you want a ginger snap recipe, boy, do I have one for you!

Bakerina posted a couple for me back this spring (maybe March or April??) when I had the terrible chocolate chip cookies. I haven't tried them yet, but both recipes sounded heavenly! I can send the URL once I'm home as I bookmarked the entry, but I don't have it with me right now.

I've always been a middling cook/baker due to "fudging" recipes - not measuring carefully, making substitutions, taking mixing shortcuts. I find that the Cook's Illustrated "New Best Recipe" cookbook helps me avoid the worst excesses of my slapdash style, because it explains exactly why certain things are important (like having the exact right ratio of flour to butter, and a temperature of 375 instead of 350 or 400) and which are not (they don't obsess over the kind of pan in this case).

So I can heartily recommend the New Best Recipe chocolate chip cookie recipes on the basis of being able to make them work very well indeed!

I use Mrs. Fields' Blue Ribbon (I'm pretty sure that's right) Chocolate Chip recipe. I haven't heard a complaint yet.

I am emailing a recipe that I think is fabulous. I also use a scoop so the size stays relatively the same. BTW - just noticed that there are now "bittersweet" chocolate chips. I'm going to try them 1/2 and 1/2 with semi-sweet next time I make these. Enjoy!

Well.... I don't know if it's the "ultimate," but I recently made the choc chip cookies out of the September 2006 Martha Stewart Living, and they're pretty yummy. Chocolate chips, oatmeal, banana, and walnuts - yowza.

Frankly, I've never had a better cookie than the Toll House recipie. And I love cookies! Use good unsalted butter, good brand of sugar and a decent squirt of vanilla (just pour, don't measure!), and of course, semi-sweet chocolate chips. Mmm. Works like a charm.

If you want to try the other, I'd try peanut blossoms. The have a sugar/peanut butter base with a big hershey kiss in the center. They are always the first to go with my holiday cookie batches.

I think the best are the Toll House cookies too - and one of my "secrets" to them is to use 1/2 butter and 1/2 shortening. And I cook them just a bit shy of the recommendation, so that they are nice and soft!

Our family's favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe is the 'Ultimate chocolate chip cookie' recipe that is in the Betty Crocker 'Ultimate Cookie Book' (yes, this cookbook devoted to cookies is worth it - mine is copyright 1992). And the best tip I can give you is always bake your cookies on parchment paper. You can take the cookies out of the oven when they are a little underdone and slide the cookies and parchment paper right off the cookie sheet onto the counter. And no cleaning up cookie sheets. I never bake cookies without parchment paper - I'm so hooked on it.
The 'Cream Wafer' cookie recipe in the same cookbook mentioned above is to die for - but a lot of work. I would never sell them (too much work) - I would just eat them.
Oh, and one of those Wilton 'cookie dough scoops' (looks like a miniature ice cream scoop) really helps you go faster when getting drop cookie dough onto the sheets.

My chocolate chip cookie receipe is a variation on the original Toll House one ... I use an extra teaspoon of vanilla and a smidge more salt. My daughter (age 10) swears by using bread flour instead of all purpose ... we had to do so once due to a supply issue (we had run out of "regular" flour), and she liked the end result so much that we just kept on.

I'm so unoriginal when it comes to cookie recipes, but my favorite is the peanut butter cookie recipe on the inside label of Skippy peanut butter. YUM.

Best recipe, hands down: Cook's Illustrated Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie. It's in their book, New Best Recipe. So good! The chewiness lasts and lasts (not chewy, but soft. Real, soft cookies). They also have a great bar recipe.

Oooh. I like the Cook's Illustrated, but in my opinion the best cc cookie ever comes from Death by Chocolate Cookies by Marcel Desaulniers.

First time commenter! I think my current favorite "cookie" is to make your favorite cheesecake, only instead of a springform pan, make double the amount of graham cracker crust, press it into a brownie pan (9x12ish size), and pour the cream cheese mixture on top. Then after baking, cut it into bars. It ends up about half cracker crust and half cheesecake. Mmm...

I, too, use 1/2 butter and 1/2 shortening (butter flavored Crisco) for the Toll House recipe. My grandma taught me to make them this way when I was a kid. I won a blue ribbon at my hometown fair when I was young, beating out lots of non-Toll House recipes, I'm sure! I don't mess with success...my husband gets all pouty if I make cookies that are not chocolate chip!
