I'm Feelin' The Itch

What itch? The itch for socks. I haven't knit a pair of socks since... well, I guess the last ones were the stripey Wyoming Cowboy ones for my mom. Look at the date on those puppies - June!! No wonder I'm getting twitchy. So, the obvious solution is to wind some sock yarn from the stash and scratch the itch. Well, life cannot be that simple. You know it as well as I do. I have the Sundara Yarn sweater to finish - on a deadline no less. Then there's Trellis. Do you remember Trellis? I barely do. Poor Trellis was derailed by the broken Holz & Stein needle, but the replacement landed in my mailbox weeks ago and yet I haven't even looked at the poor thing. Trellis may just be on vacation for awhile longer. And of course there is the lovely Butterfly. I really want to work on it because it's coming along so nicely and I'm actually getting the hang of the 2-handed thing, but the test sweater must come first. Oh, and then I have a baby shower for a very good friend in a couple of weeks and I would love to knit her a little sweater and pants and maybe a cute cabled hat. I haven't a clue when I'm going to find the time to knit those projects. She may just get a sweater and hat and no pants. All you baby people out there (because we all know I don't have a clue), if a baby is born the middle of October, what size sweater would a mom want for winter? Three month?? I swear, even when I don't have a list of projects they sneak up on me.

I've decided that I am NOT knitting anything for Christmas gifts this year. And I was thinking about knitting a sweater for Travis, but I found a great Ralph Lauren cashmere/wool fine gauge black sweater for 75% off when I was visiting my sister. It fits him and isn't bulky so I'm not knitting him a sweater for awhile. Socks maybe, but no sweaters. He likes the super fine, light weight sweaters and I just don't feel up to a sweater of that size on a size 1 needle. Oh, and I forgot. I told a friend that I'd knit her a pair of socks (with cashmere! - see the motivation?) in exchange for a couple of free massages (I'm pretty pleased with the trade, thank you very much). She hasn't picked out the yarn, but I need to do those before I knit any socks for myself. Although, it will be sock knitting and should technically scratch the itch, I'm thinking I might find some time to knit myself some socks in ... November??

:) I'm with you - no gift knitting this year - it was too much stress!

At least socks are something you can work on little by little and make progress...

3-6 months would be fine, I would think. Its funny how we all get our knitting "itches" - mine is lace these days, but I'm sure it will swing back to full garments and/or socks soon enough. I wonder what in our brain dictates that?

So many socks (and other knits) and so little time. What do we do about that?

oh, i have the sock itch too, and i think the only thing that will scratch the itch is a pair of knee-hi's.

Socks are so nice to knit because of the near instant gratification (at least compared to a sweater or shawl!).

So I will be the only insane one knitting 5 millions christmas gifts...finishing on the drive to the relatives?! Come on! I will be watching...I know you will knit atleast one!
I was also just thinking about socks. I have also neglected a baby sweater...but the hat I will finish this weekend...and work more on the test knit...and hopefully decide on a sock, which will of course be a christmas gift!

I wont be knitting anything this year either!

I think we're all going to ready for Socktoberfest!
(BTW - what's a yarntini?)

every year i'm picking three people in the family for whom i will knit something for christmas.. and we're talking like a hat or maybe mittens. nothing big, that's for sure. this way, there's not too much stress!

i have the itch for socks too! it's been too long and my last pair were for my hubby and we all know how men's socks can be (borrrring.)

An itch for socks is much better than itchy feet.............go.....knit.......sockies!

love the craft bag, at least even though the lining is small on the inside it is super cute from the outside!
i think if the baby is born in october, he/she would be about 15-20lbs in midwinter. double check, but my friends who had babies weighing in at 7-8lbs at birth ended up in that 15-20lbsrange a few months later, however, it is always better to err on the side of bigger for babies...

Heh, wanna test knit some socks for me? I just finished a pair, okay, I just finished one of the pair and I'm going to need test knitters soon. Like in the next two weeks. There won't be any big deadline for getting them done, just in a timely fashion.

I'd say a 3-month size sweater would be perfect. And I'd definitely skip the pants, knit pants aren't very practical, even for a baby.

YOur bag yesterday is very cute, even if it's not exactly how you wanted it to turn out, it's a far cry better then I could ever do. I just have no patience for sewing.

There's just never enough knitting time, is there.

By November, I'm sure your feet will be cold enough to inspire all the sock knitting you could ever imagine!

My mom taught me never to buy or make anything for a baby smaller than 6 months. They grow, they need room to wiggle, it's easier to get loose fitting clothes on a tiny tot, and finally - there's nothing more heartbreaking than receiving a beautiful handmade gift that's already too small.
p.s. Love your blog, not only for the knitting but for the window on a part of the world that is completely unknown to me.

An excellent decision on the no-Christmas-gift knitting. I'm in the same camp!

hey - I totally understand the need to make socks.. Socks are the most comforting of all knits to me. despite all the cool projects on your needles already!
and baby gifts? well, check out the fun organic cotton teddy bear that I made in a couple days for blog friend who's having a first baby in October. fast, easy, fun and no size guessing! (photos on my blog a couple entries back)

You SHOULD knit yourself some socks! That is the one thing I have no problem knitting for myself :) I think the massage deal sounds wonderful. i am such a sucker for a massage!

Not knitting Christmas gifts sounds like a great idea! I'm in the same boat. And your new knitting bag is awesome!!
