A Bit Of This, And A Bit Of That

I'm feeling random, so I'm sorry, but you're getting randomness from me today. First up, the Zephyr is awesome. Trellis is coming along nicely.

100_0255.jpg

I've completed the edge repeat and the first pattern repeat, 22 more repeats to go! I think I like the fabric made with the 2.5mm needles - it is dense, but I like it. Right now the scarf measures about 7 inches wide, and I think that's fine for a scarf. What do you think?

Second, I got the new Interweave Knits over the weekend. The patterns are ok, but nothing that jumped to the top of my to-knit list. The absolute very best part of the magazine is the fabulous article Eunny wrote on shaping a lace garmet. That girl is brilliant. If you haven't read it, go now.

Let's see, what else... Oh, has anyone used the Colonial Rosewood dpns? How are the tips? It looks like they make a 5.5 inch dpn that I think would be fabulous for socks, but I hate to order them without some personal feedback from you all.

Next up, I need a good stitch dictionary. I am knitting a square for a friend's wedding chuppah, and I think some fabulous lace is the order of the day, but nothing too fragile - it needs to have some structure. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Today is only a half day of work (yipee), and I'm excited to go home this afternoon and do some crafting. I have an apron for an apron swap that I am really close to finishing. I need to get that done and maybe spend some time with my neglected flowers, but really the only thing I want to do is knit on Trellis. I'll let you know what won out. Have a great hump day.

I think that's just the right width for a scarf. As for the wedding square, do you have any of Barbara Walker's books? I'd check there.

Lucky you! My day off went by too quickly. Love Trellis and the color is fabulous! Enjoy whatever you decide to do today!

I must thank you for the last two posts. I have tried knitting lace three times and I could not get the hang of it. I just could not do the skinny yarn with the fat needles. It did not occur to me that I could go waaaaaaaay down on needle size. I am in the process of packing all my worldly belongings and moving, but as soon as I find my yarn and needles I am going to try it your way. (I do have several socks on hand for knitting, I could not go more than a day or so without my yarn.)

PS--You are the first person I tell--about 5 minutes ago I signed the forms certifiying that I now am officially retired from the practice of law in NY. Not even my family or friends know. For some reason now I that I wrote that I started crying. Maybe you understand.

The lace is looking great! I really like that color....I think it is a good width for a scarf - wide enough without being too wide!

Any of the Barbara Walker stitch treasuries has hundreds to choose from - my library network has them, so you could check those as well as Sensational Knitted Socks has stitch patterns in it also....

I always look at the Barbara Walker books first for stitch ideas, but I also like those formerly published by Mon Tricot. These are soft cover, and I've not seen them for a while. But I also like "The Complete Book of Knitting" by Barbara Abbey. This is an old book, but my library has it, and others probably do also. Toward the end of the book, there is a stitch dictionary with advice on the kinds of projects best suited to each pattern. The new books from Vogue Knitting are ok (but not great). I actually like Knitting on the Edge better for stitch ideas. Many of them would do nicely for patterns anywhere--not just on the edge.

Your lace looks great.

Trellis is gorgeous in that color -- love it! I didn't realize the new Interweave is out -- maybe mine will come in today's mail. . . hoping . . . Enjoy your day off!!

The lace is looking beautiful, and it's such a gorgeous red!

Hmmm...my Interweave Knits hasn't come yet, but it must be getting close. Even without seeing the article, I agree with you. Eunny is a genius.

I seem to remember that Wendy bought some Colonial Rosewood needles a few months ago, and I think she said she liked them....

trellis is looking so great!

what kind of lace you looking for? I can check out my mon tricot for ya

Posted by: yahaira at July 26, 2006 10:13 AM

First of all, I virtually gasped at that scarf! What a color! My Zephyr is bland boring beige. Not even beige...."greige" is more like it! (I've GOT to get some lace going.) Second, I bought a set of VERY expensive rosewood dpns out in SLC and one of them splintered! Not good. Up to that point, I kind of liked them, but back to bamboos for me! (I have NEVER had an issue with Plymouth bamboo dpns, even in the 0's and 1's I usually use.) Third, for your lace pattern, you're going to laugh at what I found that has great patterns...one of those perpetual calendars! I found two patterns that I have been looking for for over a year, and lots that I've never seen before. Just a thought. The Harmony Guides are good, too. Last, I fail to understand how IK gets to the wilds of Wyoming before it gets to "civilization", namely Fairfield County, Connecticut! Here it is Wednesday and nada. Enjoy your half-day!!

Trellis is beautiful already, and the color is perfect. Hope you enjoy the afternoon off!!

Posted by: caitlyn at July 26, 2006 10:28 AM

Have a great afternoon!
I hope my IK comes soon - I was pretty happy with the preview that went up.

Lovely lace, Steph.

Your Trellis scarf is looking great! I see Zephyr in my (near) future - it's gorgeous!!

Posted by: kathy in juneau at July 26, 2006 11:02 AM

You already got IK?! I guess I have something to look forward to. :)

Trellis looks good. I definitely like the more dense lace for a scarf.

Enjoy the afternoon at home, and good luck with the sewing.

The lace looks great. I love lace but I often think that it loses something in the pattern when knit on big needles. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. At any rate I really like this more dense lace - it reads well.

My favorite stitch dictionaries are these: Barbara Walker, Barbara Abbey (the book mentioned above is available on Amazon.com in the used section, for $6 or so), and the Harmony Guides. All have duplications of one another, often with somewhat different names, but they also have unique-to-them patterns. Plus I often find inspiration at the Dishcloth Botique - a dishcloth is a great way to find out if you really like a new pattern, and it produces a useful swatch!

I'm a regular reader, and I appreciate the bits of Laramie that you include. I'm an alumna of UW from way back, and I sometimes miss the huge swaths of sky. But not the wind.

No IK here yet. Have you checked with Wendy Johnson to see what her opinion is of the Colonial DPNs? I'm pretty sure she has some - I think she even showed a picture of them in the past few days.

Trellis is beautiful - I've been wanting to try Zephyr for quite a while - maybe I'll make the leap. :)

wow! you already got your IK? i need to check at home and see if it came (most of my magazines end up in a pile down in the lobby, ugh.)

i love how trellis is coming out. what a great lace pattern!

the barbara walker stitch collections come highly recommended from friends of mine.

Enjoy your afternoon off! : ) Knitting during the day on a weekday is the ultimate pastime, mostly because it's such a rare occurrence! Trellis looks beautiful already - I can't wait to see the finished product.

Trellis is looking maaarvelous in that red Zephyr!

A half day, yippeee! For Frontier Days? We did Frontier Days in water aerobics on Monday. Quite interesting the way she adapts those exercises to events that are happening...

Trellis is beautiful - is a rectangular shawl? You're so lucky getting a half-day off work. Maybe you can bake another delicious pie for us to drool over! I'm looking forward to getting my fall IK now, too.

Posted by: Zarah at July 26, 2006 12:58 PM

As I mentioned in an earlier post, that Zephyr is just beautiful! I must remember the color Garnet next time I go shopping for some yarn.

Laura & Deb are correct...Wendy did a post on dpn's. In fact Colonial rosewoods are her favorite for lighter colored sock yarn and Skacel Bamboo are her favorite for darker colored yarn. See July 23rd post.

FYI, have you read the discussions concerning the different beginning and ending borders on this pattern? Just wanted to let you know before you start going crazy when you notice the borders are not identical. The following post has a complete discussion and visuals. Scroll down a bit:

really, you must stop posting RIGHT NOW. i do not need to hear another word about the zephyr. nor do i need to know that you have received your ik already. stupid atlantic ocean.

Posted by: kris at July 26, 2006 2:20 PM

And my vigil for IK begins :) I've only gotten a couple of sub issues so far, so I'm not sure of the drop time for me, but it seems to be sometime after I hear of many others getting theirs.

Your Trellis is lovely!

I think it is wonderful that you are knitting a part of your friend's chuppah. I like Walker's treasuries, and how about using a cotton yarn or linen yarn and then later treating it to make it stiffer?

I have used the Colonial rosewoods in a smaller size and they felt stickey, they just wern't smooth. My favorite double points and circulars are Holz & Stein which are very hard to get. This week I got the following notice from my favorite yarn shop, a six hour drive for me, that she is getting a shipment Friday. Also I and one other person I know have had the Colonials snap and we wern't doing anything, like sitting on them, we were just knitting along.

3. Finally, Super exciting news!!!!! Holz & Stein ROSEWOOD and EBONY circular and double point needles (US size 8 and smaller) will be available starting on Friday, first come basis. Email us at info@yarnheaven.com to be placed on the waiting list. If you are a Holz & Stein collector, do not hesitate for this extraordinary opportunity to complete your set!

The Trellis looks great! Did you make it narrower than the pattern? I have that on my list, but want to make it shawl-like...........hmmmmm.........

Posted by: christine at July 27, 2006 8:10 AM

You've already gotten your IK? Seriously what the...why do I always get it three weeks after it's been in the stores? gah.

Okay, I'll be over there in the corner pouting.

Posted by: JessaLu at July 27, 2006 2:34 PM

...and your trellis is beautiful ;o)

Posted by: JessaLu at July 27, 2006 2:35 PM

Love the Trellis, and the color. Beautiful.
I just picked up a pair of the Colonial 5.5 dpn's. Haven't used them yet, but the tips look great, and the finish is just what it is supposed to be.
