Thank You!

Thank you all so very much for your wonderful comments on Hourglass. You guys really know how to make a girl feel good! And as it turned out, your generosity was the high point of the day. This was waiting for me when I got home last night.

The renters down the way started a grass fire that got a bit out of control - the fire department came and evacuated people from the houses (but Travis and I were both at work when it happened). The really scary thing is that it got close to our house.

The first picture was taken just down the hill from my house (a couple hundred yards maybe) and the second was taken just outside my yard. It's disturbing to think that something like that can happen when you aren't home to do anything about it. The horses were all locked in the corral and Riley and Isabelle were home alone (outside, but still). I just have to think that one of the neighbors would let the horses out and take care of the dog and cat if a fire got too close. So anyway. In the end a fire will be good for the grass in that particular pasture.

Sunday I cast-on for a baby sweater for my cousin's baby. She's due in August, but the shower is the same weekend as Estes Park. I'm trying to get a couple of things knit to send since I won't be there.

It's the baby kimono from Mason-Dixon Knitting in red peaches & cream cotton. It's knitting up quickly and I'm already considering other things to knit. What do first time moms want for shower gifts? I haven't a clue about such things. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Have a great day, and again, thank you for all your wonderful comments on Hourglass.

How frightening! I'm so glad that everyone is okay.
The baby kimono sweater is adorable!

OMG! I'm glad everyone and your house are okay.

I'm so glad to hear that you and Travis and your house were all okay. Wow, that must have been very unsettling (understatement).

On a high note - your hourglass turned out fabulously: the color, the fit, everything!

That is so scary! This year could be very bad for fires in the West.
Most new moms need the type of clothes that a baby can get dirty and be washed easily. Babies go through tons of clothes the first few months. A pretty knit item is special, too as the baby must dress up a bit from time to time.

Scary indeed--my now grown-up baby moved to Wyoming (she's a librarian, northwest Wyoming) and that view could have been out her trailer window.
New moms need things they can wear that wash. I think M-D knitted washcloths, in any/all sizes, might be real handy--for washing the baby, wiping spills/emissions, over the shoulder...

I'm so glad nothing truly bad happened! Scary stuff. And the sweater is really cute. I second what Margene said about gift ideas. Onesies are a terrific shower gift.

I didn't leave a comment yesterday, don't know why. Your sweater looks fantastic!
Scary about the grass fire. Hopefully your neighbors will be more cautious about controlled burns in the future -- I know I would get all paranoid about it if it were me!

And for the baby shower -- I really liked it when people gave me clothese for my son to wear when he got older. He was only tiny for, like, two seconds. So all the adorable tiny clothes didn't get much use. Now he wears a little red sweatsuit an older friend of mine gave us. She had 10 (yes, 10!) kids herself, so I suspect that her shower gift instincts are probably better than anyone's. As it turns out, they are!

wow, that's scary to think that a fire was raging by your home and you weren't even there! crazy.

Bibs. Soft toys. Burp cloths. Blankies. Socks. All things a knitter can whip up with one hand tied behind her back! I have a long story for you when I get a chance to breathe...maybe tomorrow.

OH thank goodness it didn't reach your home. I'm always worried that something like that will happen at our house. Right now the wheat field is all dry, so we don't burn because you never know what one little spark could do.

Glad all the animals are alright. I'm sure the neighbors would have helped them though.

That is so scarey and I am so glad your home and animals are okay. What a scarey thing to even come upon as you are driving in and then having all those "what-if's" play in your mind. Sorry you have to go through that. I am thinking of doing that kimono sweater for my neice/nephew due in September. I am going to Houston next week to visit my brother and sis-in-law and visiting the new store Yarntopia to buy the yarn!

I'm glad everyone is ok! As for baby shower gifts, I've made a few diaper cakes, and they have always been big hits. Depending on how crafy you are (and you seem to be pretty crafty!), a diaper cake can turn into a real masterpiece. It looks great at the shower, and the new moms can certainly use the diapers and other toys that make up the cake.

How restrained on the commentary about those stupid-ass people who started a grass fire.

Posted by: claudia at June 7, 2006 2:03 PM

P.S. - A diaper cake looks like a 3-tier cake but is actually made out of diapers. You can stick little baby gifts (rattles, toys, etc.) in between the diapers to decorate the cake. Wrap the whole thing in cellophane and ribbon, and it makes a very cute gift. I think this is a relatively new thing. :)

Favorite knitted baby items are hats and lots of burp cloths, and of course, the MDK kimono. In general, I am a pretty anti baby gear kind of person, but in the non-knitted realm, I can't say enough great things about the Bumbo seat. You can get it at Babies R Us or amazon.com.

Adorable kimono, and great color choice!

I am glad that everything is OK at your home, after such a scare.
Stephanie, new Moms like Bibs, bathtowels or blankets. I usually sew the bathtowels for baby, I buy terry cloth fabric, and use the size like a wash cloth to sew in the corner on the diagonal for what looks like a hood. They make a great gifts, I put all these things in a basket for a baby shower.

OMG! I can't believe that fire got so close! I'm glad everything and everyone are all right.

Your baby kimono is adorable! What I'd add to what others have said about what to give to a new mom is that they will get a LOT of stuff for newborns (size-wise), and then the baby grows out of it all really fast. I always knit for 3-6 months even up to 1yr. Since you're already knitting, if you want to throw in other practical stuff, get diapers that are a couple sizes bigger than newborn so she's got a stash. (Apparently babies grow out of newborn diapers pretty darn quickly - and they get changed about 10 times per day. That's a boatload of diapers!!)

Wow scarey about the fire!

Just an idea, but at a baby shower all the gifts are for the baby. It's always nce to throw somethig in for Mom too :-)

How quickly things can happen in that kind of landscape - incredible (to those of us rather unfamiliar with it, that is).
