I May Have Spoken Too Soon
Three might not be my lucky number. And in order to decide, I need all of your most brilliant advice. So, the Pomatomus pattern calls for Shelridge Farm Soft Touch Ultra Fingering Weight yarn and size 2.75 mm needles. I'm using Sundara Sock Yarn and I cast on with 2.75 mm needles. Did I swatch? Heck no. And now I'm worried that the sock is going to be too big. I know, from too small to too big. So, after a fairly significant bit of freaking out yesterday afternoon, I decided I'd start the second ball and use 2.5 mm needles and compare the two. Here's what I have (for reference I've used a stockinette sock knit in Lorna's Laces and a 2x2 ribbed sport weight sock):

I took the first sock off the needles and tried it on and it fits - the pattern is really stretchy, so it's really hard to know if it will stretch out to be too big (and you know I'm freaked out about this because of my last two disasterous attempts). What do you think? Should I continue with the 2.75 mm or the 2.5 mm needles?
HELP. Please.

I don't know what to tell you! I think it's too early to say whether the third time is a charm or not, maybe you need to keep going for a bit :). I would just pick one, and try on the sock every few inches. And then there will be some frogging of the one which isn't right, but we've all done that, no big deal!

Ack!! I think the Grump's advice is sound. Your pal's sock/leg size significantly different from yours, I'm guessing since even though it fits you you're still worried?

If it's really stretchy, you may want to go with the 2.5....just a thought

Not to freak you out even more, but I used 2.5mm (US1) and it ended up fitting just right, as in harldy any stretch. I would have actually preferred the fit to be more snug but there was no way I was going to use US0. BUT having said that, I do have very very very small ankles and a narrow foot. So I would say go with the 2.5mm needles. Good luck!

The whole sock is ribbed, very stretchy and should stay 'huggy' to the leg. I'd keep going.

I would continue with the small ones and see if they fit right. Im not sure how your pal's feet compare to yours (what a weird statement) but just keep trying them on.

I guess it depends on how big your pal's legs/feet are. My guess is that either one would work. Try them both on. If they both fit you OK, then go with the bigger one or the smaller one based on whether your pal's legs are bigger/smaller than yours.

I'd go with the smaller one but I like my socks snug.

I was going to say, go with the smaller one - it's stretchy right? - but I guess it depends how big your pal's feet/legs are. If they are similar to yours, I'd go with the smaller size. Slouchy socks... =(
Leave them in the 80's!

Hmmm...I'm not sure what to tell you. My instinct is to go with the smaller size because the pattern is so stretchy. I know I used a different yarn than you, but when I tried this pattern I used 2.5mm. Good luck with this.

I like socks knit a bit tightly, so I'd go with the smaller side. Either way seems like it would work though. Good luck!

How much bigger are your sockpal's feet/legs than yours? If it's not terribly bigger (circumference around the leg), then I would stick with the 2.5 mm, as you don't want it to be too big and too much room. If the circumference difference is large, then stay with the 2.75 mm.

I'm thinking make her a sweater :-)
Hmmm, I think you said before her feet were about the same size as yours, but the 2.75 fits you, then I'd tend to keep goign with the 2.75.
Except if you thought it might loosen up on you and be too small, then switch to the 2.5 because there's nothing worse then slouchy socks that get eaten by shoes.
Big help aren't I. My instincts would be the 2.5 if it's a really stretchy pattern.

Stephanie - I was wrong - I'm using 2 US needles, not 2 mm...........does that help?
And they are really stretchy and fit fine!

i still vote 2.5mm! stretchy, stretchy. and if anything they will stretch more with wear, right?
Posted by: kris at April 6, 2006 1:55 PM
If that pattern is really strechy I'd probably say go with the 2.5 mm version so there is enough tautness to stay up on the leg. But really it'll have to be your call ultimately...

I agree with the others. Use the smaller needles.

I SAY HAVE A GLASS OR TWO OF WINE AND YOU WON'T CARE. REALLY I'M SORRY YOU ARE SO STRESSED, WISH I COULD HELP!!!!

I vote with Debbie! Wine is good, and solves all problems. ;-)
But, seriously... what is the circumference of each sock? Is either one close to what the pattern calls for (6" around leg)? If so, then you should probably go with the one that's close. Ribbed patterns seem pretty forgiving when it comes to sizing, so hopefully you'll be OK no matter what!

Wait, have you tried on the 2.5 one? How's that fit? It looks pretty small, compared to those other socks. I don't know. I'm brain dead. Good luck, may the force be with you.

hmm, maybe the small size one? or, could you anonymously email your pal and aks if she/he like socks snug or loose? does that help? also, a trip down to the washer/dryer usually tighten the sock a little bit, even the superwash ones.
