Paying the Piper

When you know your gauge is off and you knit anyway, eventually you have to pay the piper. Today is that day for me. The lovely Chalet Socks have to be frogged. Sad, I know, but I knew this could happen. I have been trying them on as I go, but just in the last inch or two have I noticed a problem.

As the leg has gotten longer it has become very difficult to get the leg of the sock over my heel - and people, I have skinny feet and ankles. My sock pal's feet measure the same as mine, but I don't have an ankle measurement. I really can't risk it. It'd be absolutely awful if she couldn't get the sock on! Doncha think?

Once I get it over my heel, it fits nicely.

But that just isn't good enough. So, the sock has to be frogged. Now it's just a matter of where I go from here. These socks are knit with Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock on size 1 addi turbos (2.5mm). The yarn is a finer sock yarn, so I'm doubtful it will knit up nicely on a size 2 (although if my gauge is tight, whiich it is, this should work). So, what do you all think I should do? Try knitting the sock again on a size 2, find a different yarn, or find a different pattern for this yarn?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Personally, I don't like the fabric Shepherd Sock makes on size 2s. Too loose.

Could you add some stitches somewhere? Knit the cuff on size 2s and then switch to 1s for the leg?

I was going to suggest what Ruth already mentioned - adding stitches, if possible, without throwing off the pattern. If you make the leg bigger, will it make the sock too baggy at the ankles? If so, maybe a different pattern would be the best solution. How frustrating!

Size2 maybe too big for the yarn ... do you have 1.5 needles? I recently found that I knit a lot of my socks using 1.5.
Or as Ruth suggested, use different needles for the leg and foot.

What a bummer! If you can't add more stitches to make this pattern work, then maybe another pattern is best for the Shepherd Sock. Unless, of course, you like this yarn color and can knit some socks for yourself with it. Then maybe another yarn for the Chalet socks! =)

I had good luck with Shepherd Sock for the Conwy pattern in KOTR. Or maybe you can find some 1.5's.

I have that problem with socks ALL the time - getting them over the heel. The past couple of times I've just decided to deal with the tugging, but if the socks were for someone else I'd definitely be concerned. I'd probably give it another go on larger needles (although if they're more than just a bit too tight, this might not do much) or try a different pattern.

Damn. That damn piper..........

Glad I'm not the only one - I had to do the same for same reason on my 1st sockapaloooza sock. Like others have said, I don't think the LL on 2s will make a good fabric, but you can always swatch and see if it'll work in this case. Or add some stitches.

Well, what if you use the size 1.5 needles with more stitches? It's just that I've only ever seen the 1.5's in Brittany DPNs. But that would be a compromise. Or you could get LL Shepherd Sport in the same color.

I say add more stitches - you don't want the fabric too floppy and the next size addi turbos would be 3mm. That would make a flimsy fabric in the LL if it's a finer sock yarn.

Find a different pattern for the yarn and if you want this pattern use another yarn like the Footpath. Lorna's is finer than many yarns even though it doesn't feel like it. Traveling stitches do draw in and have little give. A yarn with more give should work better.

You are actually already using US 1 1/2 needles. Addi Turbo doesn't make circular needles in the 2.25mm that is a US 1. I personally don't like Lorna's knit up on anything bigger than size 0s, so I wouldn't go bigger. And even though it fits on your leg, it looks really stretched out, so it would be more pleasing for the pattern (at least for me) to have it less stretched out. How many stitches are there total? That would help me figure out if you should maybe go all the way up to a sport weight yarn (I plan to do that for some of the Nancy Bush socks I will knit) or if you could use a slightly thicker sock yarn, like say a Koigu or a Sundara Yarn (heh) Maybe even a Mountain Colors, although I don't know if they do a solid colored sock yarn. So those are my thoughts.

Hmmm... have you considered adding stitches into the pattern repeat? Another rib in between the cables? I'm sure you could tweak it a little to get the overall effect of the pattern, without making things too complicted.

Into all our lives a little froggng must be done, at least you realized it before the 2nd sock was started and the first finished.

It's a cute sock though.

Eeeeh, that is pretty bad. But I echo what everyone else says, another pattern or add stitches OR find some 2.75mm, that may work

Posted by: Angela at March 9, 2006 3:08 PM

Oh no! Well, it's a large swatch . . .

I'd go with adding extra stitches. Specifically, you know where there's the one repeat of the twisted rib between each pattern? You could make it 2 repeats (2 ktbl colums) - which would be another 8 or 10 stitches around.

Margene is so smart.

Ack! I'm going to echo everyone else and say add more stitches...what a pretty color! It would be a shame to switch the yarn.

SAD frogging that much sock, esp one that pretty. Not so good with the thinking today, so I'm not going to weigh in on the issues, but it's a beautiful pattern.

Bummer, I thought I paid the piper enough for everybody on my last off-gauge project.

Posted by: Stephanie at March 9, 2006 6:13 PM

I say if you knit really tight, a US2 would probably work :)
