Lack of Inspiration
I've decided I'm just not witty or funny. Travis likes to say that I'm not even fun, "No offense dear, but you just aren't that fun" (yes, that's a direct quote - isn't he sweet). I don't think that's exactly true, but my idea of fun isn't really mainstream. As I'm sure you can guess, fun for me is sitting at home knitting and watching a movie or reading a good book - something kind of, well, boring. I read so many really great blogs and wish that I could write like that. I often wonder if it's that my life isn't as interesting as other people's or if I just don't have the ability to be creative and put things in an entertaining light. Maybe a little of both. Or maybe it's that the only writing I really do it boring legal interpretation - no creativity around here. Creativity gets you in trouble in my profession (at least the kind of creativity I'm talking about here). Maybe I'm just in a slump. Who knows.
I didn't knit a single stitch yesterday. I feel like I should whisper that statement - like a confession or something. Not knitting could explain my depression. Knitting really perks me up and makes me feel like I've accomplished something - even if it's only 5 rows of something. Last night was the grocery store (yuck) and random crap around the house. What is it with all the random stuff lately? Post-holiday blahs? Beats me.
Ok, enough of the whiny crap around here. I'm boring myself to tears. Rebekah tagged with a fun meme, and in an effort to end this post on a high note, here goes:
4 jobs you've had in your life:
1. Ranch hand
2. Waitress
3. Department Store Department Manager
4. Attorney

1. The ranch (growing up)
2. A small apartment in Grapevine, TX
3. A lovely trailer
4. Our current house in Laramie - I love it
4 tv shows you love to watch:
1. Alias
2. Lost
3. Grey's Anatomy
4. E-Ring
4 places you've been on vacation:
Um, vacation? I'll try, but I'm going to have to go back to when I was a kid.
1. Yellowstone National Park/Jackson Hole, WY
2. The Black Hills, SD
3. Phoenix, AZ
4. Cancun, Mexico
4 websites you visit daily:
1. blogs - lots of blogs
2. Movable Type (well, almost every day)
3. wyoming.com
4. amazon (or at least I visit it entirely too often)

1. steak
2. crab
3. bread of all kinds, including pastries
4. desserts of all varieties
4 places you'd rather be right now:
1. home on the couch
2. on vacation anywhere
3. having lunch with Travis
4. at my in-law's
4 bloggers you are tagging:
This is always a bit tricky, so if I tag you and you aren't interested, just pretend like you don't know anything about this here meme. I won't mind a bit. So, how about I tag: Caitlyn, Cyndi, Jenn, and Blossom
Comments
I'm definitely with you on the idea of fun! Parties, running around, people jabbering, whatever--I'll pass. Please just let me stay at home with lots of quiet and lots of yarn.

hey, I don't think you have to be witty to be interesting.. I enjoy your blog because you have a consistent tone, and speak honestly. Travis's quote reminds me of what my mom always says: "No one ever accused me of being fun". I am totally with you about knitting and reading being fun. For whatever reason, everyone else just doesn't get it... but they are totally missing out :-)

Speaking as an unrepentent homebody: Reading books and watching movies while knitting isn't most people's idea of fun?! The eff?
Anyway, I love your blog, I wouldn't think of "unwinding" if it were drunk pictures and blurry knitting photos all the time :)

Your thoughts on how your job affects the way you think and communicate struck home with me today - from the moment I entered my profession (financial services) I have been strongly encouraged to write, think and act within business-ese... to the point where my writing is automatically concise, accurate, and well, boring.
Creativity *definitely* gets you in trouble in my profession.
Recently I was dwelling on this, and I'm going to try to fight The Man in my own little ways. A fun adjective in an email here, a twist of words on an investment note there.
I might even wear pink to the office.
So there. ;)

I kind of have the blahs too, if it wasn't for the spinning this week I would have had nothing to talk about.
A ranch hand, really! How cool is that. You know I finally figured out my dream job, an archealogist. I think it would be so neat to discover something ancient.

Ditto on the homebody-ness. I guess I'm no fun, either. I think it's this time of year that produces all the blahs - holidays are over, we're not quite close enough to spring yet, etc.

My boyfriend tells me I'm not fun too. It's such a downer. I AM fun, just not in the way he expects.

I can relate to your feelings. I love bumming around the house in my pajamas while knitting or reading. Yep, it sounds really boring but it’s what makes me happy so I have no problem being boring.
As for knitting – some days (usually Mondays because I am dead tired), I don’t knit a single stitch either. But then a day or two later, I’m super eager to pick up the needles again and that makes up for the blah feelings.
I agree with Diana – I love reading your blog because you write eloquently and honestly with a lighthearted tone. And it’s wonderful that you can think of something interesting to write practically every day – I wish I could do that!
I’ll get to your knitting meme later today or tomorrow. =)

I often feel the same way when I read some of the really funny, creative and well written blogs. The point for me is to have fun. I don't believe for one minute you don't know how to have a good time. But not knitting for an entire day would make anyone sad! Get the needles and have some fun tonight;-)

Looks like you are in good company with the rest of us boring knit bloggers! :-) Seriously though, I feel the same way as you about being boring/not fun(ny), and I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with have gone through law school and having a legal job for almost 4 years. (at least that's my excuse!) Now, it's all about the relevant facts, all the time, and not much else. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Thanks for tagging me, it will be a fun break from writing nasty essays later on today.
Now, off to practice conforming to the BarBri norm on some sample tests. Wheee!

I'm with you on the hanging around the house. Being "fun" is exhausting and frequently not as cool as you imagined.
Posted by: Leanne at January 18, 2006 2:56 PM
My husband says I'm no fun, too. And knitting, watching movies and reading is loads of fun. I enjoy reading your blog, you present things well and I keep coming back for more. Enjoy being you.
Posted by: Areli at January 18, 2006 3:24 PM
preception of having fun is really relative. i enjoy knitting and reading, i think they are the best things. my idea of having fun is do what you love and enjoy.
Posted by: blossom at January 18, 2006 3:29 PM
Knitting, not fun? Those are fighting words! I spent an afternoon over the weekend knitting and my boyfriend said to me, "So You just sat and knit .... and talked about knitting .... for seven hours?"
Posted by: Angela at January 18, 2006 3:57 PM
Face it, law school kind of saps the humor out of us......and who wants to hire a comic attorney? I love your blog, and visit everytime you write something, so that says something, I think. Chin up, girl....spring is on the way....eventually.....
Posted by: christine at January 18, 2006 4:20 PM
Speaking as an almost-hermit, here (more and more, my idea of a great weekend is lighting a fire, watching good movies, cooking, and in general hibernating for 48 hours straight), I think you're plenty fun. Sorry about the bit of midwinter malaise facing you...cheer up!

It can't be a boring blog otherwise you wouldn't have as many visitors on a regular basis as you do! I check in everyday. I like w hat you knit and I like your stories. I am happiest when I can sit home in front of the TV and knit (preferably in a clean house but that takes away from reading/movie/knitting time - and not necessarily in that order). I don't have a "job" but I stay busy running with the kids that I just enjoy relaxing at home. I am a homebody though and with knitting I ACCOMPLISH something on a regular basis! So your idea of fun and my idea of fun are the same. I bet if you put all these people in the same room and we could sit and knit we would be having loads of fun - knitting and talking about knitting and shopping for yarn! F.U.N. Probably Travis and Kevin would get along well.

My idea of a good time is sitting at home with my knitting and a good movie, probably a foreign film. Tonight my dear hubby told me that I am "getting older by the minute". He of course lives a more exciting life being a drummer in a band in his spare time. I would rather be knitting. I wonder if I am not all that interesting (especially when I read other people's blogs) but I try to not care too much.
Posted by: emily at January 18, 2006 6:50 PM
I know exactly how you feel. People constantly demand updates on my life and "what I've been up to" and the response is always "work, knitting, reading, internet," more or less. I sometimes wonder if maybe I've become painfully domestic, but after some thought I inevitably come to the same conclusion: I've always been like this. I've always preferred to be alone, doing something mellow, and if ever I crave social interaction my job provides me with more than I could possibly need or want.
Posted by: Juniper at January 18, 2006 10:27 PM
Are you kidding me? I think you're quite funny and so incredibly charming and genuine. Look at how many people read your blog. They wouldn't if you weren't entertaining!
Everyone gets into a funk - both knitting and blogging - but you'll snap out of it. Even in a funk you're pretty fun to read.
I promise I'll answer the meme this time but it'll have to wait until I get back from Duluth. If I forget, please remind me!

i am so with you as far as staying home goes. who wants to go out...worry about drink/driving (our laws over here are quite tight) put up with cigarette smoke, bad music and obnoxious friends of friends. give me a bottle of wine, some crackers and cheese, a good dvd and of course my knitting.
however, i have to admit there are times when letting my hair down is a great option too!

Well, it sounds like you have plenty of support already, but I just wanted to say that I too sometimes feel like the lawyer side of me is sucking out the creative side. I think you just have to look at it in the long term -- eventually creativity is useful, you just have to figure a way to preserve it until you get back the grunt-work stage. (I don't think you're boring, either!)
Posted by: Zarah at January 19, 2006 5:56 AM
You're not boring at all. At my house, we consider it cool to be a dork and sit around and read and knit all day. It took me awhile to come to terms with that, but now I'm proud of it. As everyone has said, you don't need to live the most exciting, active life to be an interesting person. Embrace your homebody-ness (if that's really a word). You are who you are, and you know what you enjoy. And that is why we read your blog.
Posted by: Jocele at January 19, 2006 9:00 AM
I think what you are feeling right now is something that all bloggers experience (well, maybe not la Harlot or Norma) at least once or twice. It does not have to be about funny, but you are too fun! And not boring! Don't forget..we met you. We KNOW! As for the knitting guilts, you are soon going to have the antidote for that...your spinning wheel! When you don't feel like knitting, you can SPIN! (I agree with Angela, though. It must be the law school.)
Posted by: Marcia at January 19, 2006 9:39 AM
Stephanie, why would people read your blog if you were boring? It's true that some people are funny and some people are life-of-the-party types. Some people are funny in person, others are only funny in writing. Other people are more quiet and more earnest. It takes all kinds, and I don't think one is better than the other. I like your voice because it IS earnest. But you're not TOO serious, don't worry about that! And you're obviously not alone in enjoying knitting. I'm pretty sure that the bulk of your readers are in that boat with you. :)
Even though I don't think your worry is merited, I can relate to it. However, just remember that your life on a ranch out in Wyoming is *some* people's (read "my") dream. It might not be exciting to you, but it sounds like great to this girl locked in a city in front of a computer.
We all have these days. I hope you start to feel less worried and more confident soon. We hope to hear from you!

I think you are funny! See knitting understand each other, I don't think my husbadn apprecates my hummor either. Actually I could have written your post word for word. Especailly the part about my husbnad not thinking I am funny and the being boreing. My husband love being out to the house, he is alway a hit at parties, but me I would rather be home with my dog and my knitting.
It is hard to find that balance. It hink that is why I am so thankful for blogging, and that I took up knitting int he first place. I really has made me feel like I have a place in the world:)
I and don't be too concerned about you lack of knitting, we all go through seasons!
Posted by: Joelene at January 19, 2006 10:15 AM
I think I could of written your post (aside from the meme answers anyway). I just don't have a sense of humor that translates well to words on a screen. It I'm totally truthful it's pretty rare that I make a good funny in person too.
Posted by: Kristi at January 19, 2006 1:53 PM
I am a total homebody. My idea of fun is very much like yours - curled up under a blanket watching a movie with the needles and yarn in my hands - and if not that, just swap the needles for a book. See? this does not make you boring at all to me, because I enjoy the EXACT same things!
One of my personal goals for 2006 was to expand my creativity with more crafts, and more personal reflection on the nature of crafting, and making beautiful things - I try not to think of that as boring.
Best to you~

Um, Steph, hello? Not witty? Now you are being funny. People read your blog because you're clever, you're talented and you've got an endearing self-deprecating wit. Which means you are far from boring!
Happy 1st Bloggy Birthday! This is a milestone.
