Why Do You Blog?

Carolyn posted this meme on her blog yesterday and since I haven't taken pictures of my Christmas decorations or made any progress on any knitting, I'm posting about why I blog. If you don't care, just skip over me today. I hope to have knitting content tomorrow (fingers crossed).

Why Do I Blog?
I started blogging not long after I started knitting again. I enjoyed reading everyone's progress and thought it might be fun to have people look at what I was working on and give comments and suggestions. I don't have a strong local knitting community and I wanted to have some friends who knit. As I continue blogging I find it very useful as a motivator and as a way to keep track of what I've done and what worked and what didn't.

Why Do I Read Blogs?
I read blogs because I like to find out more about what's out there in the knitting world. I like learning new techniques and finding new patterns. Without all of you, I wouldn't know half of what I know and I wouldn't have tried a fraction of what I've tried. I also read blogs because I feel like I've made a connection with the blogger - we're friends who share a love of a wonderful craft. Thanks to you all for being such an inspiration.

If you'd like to answer this, I'd love to read your answers, but I know everyone's busy, so I'm leaving it up to you.

Have a great day.

I enjoyed reading your answers to these questions, I feel basically the same way. I also use it to get input on projects so as to minimize the amount of boredome I inflict on my husband.

Just today I asked myself how you could knit in a vacuum. Fortunately I have a large group of local friend/knitters. But blogging has brought so much more information, new ideas and patterns, yarns and shopping opportunities, and most importantly friends across the miles. The world is certainly smaller because of the Internet and women are here in large numbers. We find it easy to connect, communicate, offer support, and a good laugh when needed, as well as real friendship, even though many of us may never meet in person. I truly had no idea when I started what blogging would be like or how important it would become to my daily life. Thanks for asking and answering the question.

When I tagged a few folks with that meme a few weeks ago, I really wondered if most people were doing this "blog" thing for the same reasons that I was - and now, it's great to read other responses. Having only had a blog since August, I now cannot imagine what my daily life would be without knowing and meeting other knit bloggers, and the information that I gain is unbelieveable. As Martha would say "It's a good thing."

Without blogging Judy (smattering) and I couldn't virtually spin together.

I feel like we are this secret world of knitters...on line knitters...it's kind of freakish! I LOVE IT!

Like Margene said, when I started blogging, I had no idea it would turn into the life-enriching medium that it did. I have met so many wonderful people, and I receive daily inspiration from everyone I meet in our little knitting world. It is good to step back and look at it for the wonder it is! So many people say that "community" does not happen like it used to - I think our little community proves that while it may look a little different than the traditional face-to-face, it can still be very meaningful. Great post, Steph. Love reading your answers, and your comments.

Best,
L

stephanie, i could write almost word-for-word what you wrote about 'why i blog.' Even though I live in this place of population density, I still don't really have a 'community of knitters.' I have one friend, Robyn, with whom I get together once in a while to knit (like tomorrow). No, I think of my favorite knit-bloggers as my knitting community!

p.s. when i started knitting again, (and blogging!)in May 2004, I did at that time have a little 'craft circle' meeting (almost) weekly, but we haven't met for about a year now. we're always saying we're going to meet, but...

I agree with everyone else that it's all about the community. Our lives are so busy now that there's no real time for 'sewing bees' or other connecting activities. We've become so isolated! Blogging is as close to a remedy for that as I can imagine.

Stay warm!

Well, I know my reasons have changed over time. I started blogging to share what I'm working on, and to keep a diary of my projects for myself. I've been blogging for about 10 months now, and I'd say that I continue to blog for the same reasons, but I now have added more reasons to that short list. I've made some very good blog pals that I enjoy reading about and talking to. I also learn about new techniques, patterns, and tips on practically a daily basis. I've received inspiration and support for my crafting efforts. I also feel a sense of community of wonderful, talented people who share the same passion that I do, yarn and knitting.

i read blogs becuase i really enjoy the wit and intelligence and the laugh-out-loud stories from other bloggers. i love to see everyone's creations and am amazed on a daily basis at what can be done with a hook, needles and yarn. it is such inspiration!
i blog because i hope to become more like all of you! no, seriously, i enjoy it. to get comments on my goofy posts thrills me to no end - yes, i'm a big'ol dork :)

Your blog is great - love it!

I blog and no one even knows it. I've got my blog as an online picture diary. To share my life and pictures with my bestfriend in MN. I live in GA. I blog because not many people in my life appreciate what I knit/weave/spin but my friend in MN. She gets all types of items and can see what I'm working on. I blog because it is something to do to share myself no matter how limited a way.

I read blogs because there are some very quirky people online. To not be in a vaccum with only library books to look to for help. I don't ask questions, I read past post. Blogging feels a need I have to interact without interacting as I am quite shy.

I have been blogging for a very short time, however, I like the idea of having a journal where I can place pictures and keep track of my life and my knitted items. It also inspires me to learn new techniques, learn new things so that I can share with all of the blogging community.

I enjoy reading blogs for many reasons, the most important, I get to meet other knitters/loomers from all over the world. I have formed some friendships with some other knitters whom I admire and I tend to knit the same things they knit--I guess, they inspire me to be more courageous in my knitting.

Why do I blog? I never knew blogland existed til I joined SnB when I moved to a new place. Until then I had knitted in a vacuum for decades. My knowledge was fairly limited, and now I find there is just sooo much out there and so many very talented knitters. So I blog and it makes my daughter laugh since no one else in my family gets it. I can't even get them to go to my family spaces place to checkout my photos and personal blog!!!
