The Secret Life of a Blogger
Grumperina posted a lovely discussion about knitting and blogging and who knows about these activities and why or why not. The fact that I knit is well known by all who know me well. I knit in the car on the way to work, I knit in my office at lunch, I knit at home, I knit at family functions, pretty much whenever I get a spare moment. My husband is still of the belief that only elderly women knit and he seems concerned that all my knitting is going to turn me into a senior citizen at any moment. He doesn't believe me when I tell him I know lots of young, hip women who knit. He thinks I've made you all up in an attempt to justify my addiction. I don't want you to get the wrong idea about my dear husband; he doesn't mock my knitting, but rather looks at it as one more old fashioned thing I like to do - more amused and indulgent. My evil plan is to knit him a wonderful pair of socks and then a sweater - he will begin to believe the wonders of handknitting. My mom and mother-in-law are both learning (or relearning) to knit because of my knitting. One of my close friends is having her grandmother teach her to knit, one wants me to teach her after the holidays, and I taught one last year. And then some have their own hobbies, but are supportive of my love of knitting. Then there are some who just don't understnad and don't really want to and that's fine to. I don't knit so people will understand me, I knit because I want to.
As for my blog, my husband didn't seem interested when I told him about it - I believe there was some eye rolling involved. I'd love it if he'd stop by, but I'm not holding my breath, it really isn't his thing. My mom and mother-in-law stop by on occassion, but don't generally leave comments. I'm not sure why, but they seem to know what's going on with my knitting. A couple of my close friends seem to read, but again don't comment. My friend Stacey lives in Texas and she seems to read the blog on a regular basis because if I don't post for a couple of days, she calls to make sure I'm ok. None of my other friends stop by, although I think I told my close friends the address. I think my friends who don't knit don't really understand the point of the blog and that's fine. No one at work knows about my blog and I'm just fine with that. A few of them have expressed some mild interest in my knitting, but the blog just isn't something I feel comfortable sharing with my co-workers. I guess it's my desire to keep my personal and professional lives separate and I just wouldn't want anyone I work with knowing I spent half the night fixing a dropped stitch, or whatever it was.
So, there you have it. If you'd like to share your thoughts on your knitting and your blog, I'd love to read them. Have a great Wednesday.

Thanks for sharing, Stephanie! The way you feel about your blog and your coworkers is exactly how I feel - they know I knit, they express mild interest, but there's no reason for us to have discussions about things I mention on the blog :).

I feel mostly the same way, although none of my friends or even family outside of the internet world know about my blog. They all know about my knitting however, and I think my friends think I'm insane as not a one of them knits, but my family understand completely and really likes it.
My husband knows of my blog of course, although I never knew he visited until this last week. The little sneak. Thankfully I never write anything I wouldn't want him to read anyway.

Hy husband is under the belief that it is an old lady's activity to knit. When I curl up at night and put on my eye glasses and pull out my needles he lovingly makes old lady jokes about me. I do not care even the smallest bit though because I am happier than ever when I am knitting.

Thanks for sharing! This was fun to read! (I get the old lady jokes from my boyfriend. When will they get that knitting isn't just for old ladies?)

I've been thinking about answering this one, too, but I got a chuckle out of your post. I've got an "eye-rolling" skeptic, too, who also thinks that I am making up all of the other knitters who are "just like me."

It seems many of us try to keep personal/work seperated. I suppose its only natural - although I wonder about gender roles regarding that: I work with mostly men, but when I had a job at a place where we were all women, there was a whole lot more talk of personal stuff. I know the people at work that do know more of my personal life tend to be women as well.

I really enjoyed reading about this, Steph. It is interesting how people around us react to these things - I have had similar experiences with the friends that don't knit and that wouldn't understand. I always laugh when people say the old lady thing: I am a 25 yo library student who knits. Librarian knitter - that is definitely a stereotype, eh? ;)

what an interesting discussion!! thanks for sharing. i am exactly the same with you about sharing knitting blogs with coworkers, none of them knows about it which is good. i'm afraid they'll find out one day as all of them know i knit.
i'm glad my husband has always been v. supportive of my knitting, he thinks it is the coolest thing. he even offered (only once, and probably forgotten now) that he wants to come to LYS and pick out sock yarns he like so i'll knit him another pair of socks.
but yes, you should definitely knit your husband a pair of socks. he'll come around!

I sure get the "eye rolling" about the blog thing, but never about knitting! Of all the hobbies and crafts I've ever tried, knitting is about the only one that Himself is totally at ease with. After all, his mother knit. 'Nuff said.

My husband doesn't mind my knitting although he does see the stash growing quite a bit! He doesn't say anything! He knows about my blog, but I don't think he reads it because the poor guy can barely get through a one line email from me. He's just not into the knitting but he does the appropriate oohing and ahhing when I finish something and I knitted him a sweater last year that he wears often. He doesn't call me old because I'm 5 years younger than him. Funny story - he went to NYC for a quick visit to his mom in the hospital this past weekend (she's okay now). He walked around NYC Saturday night remembering his youth there and sent me pictures from his phone of the sites. He went into a bar for a beer and said it was one of the worst experiences of his life - he felt OLD! He said there was no one there under 25 he was sure. He said everyone his age was home sleeping in front of the TV - poor guy! I think I was home - knitting! My friends also give me the eye roll when I tell them about my blog and I've never seen a comment from any of them. So, I guess they don't stop by! I'm done!

I've only been knitting for a couple of years, and I've been married for 10. My husband was actually very glad when I started knitting, one because there is such a dramatic difference in the preknitting me and postknitting me, and two, he could really see how much I love it. I discovered the world of knitbloggers quite by accident over the Summer and was very pleased to see I wasn't the only obsessive knitter out there. Some of my friends know about the blog, and some don't. Lot's of guys don't get the whole knitting thing, about like I don't understand how sports and video games become a life and death obsession for some. That's ok. As for your husband's suspended belief about any hip young knitters, I can name a few he knows of, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox Arquette.
