Bribery

Thank you all so much for your wonderful thoughts on motivation. You gave me a lot to think about and have motivated me to try to be better with my running and I really enjoyed hearing all about the reasons you knit.

Being who I am, and doing things the way I do, I ordered a book on running, which came highly recommended and has great reviews. So, I'm going to read the parts that apply to me next week and start running the week of the 28th (after my karate test and realistically the first chance I'm going to have to dedicate to any new exercise). I've also decided that the best way to keep myself motivated until the running itself becomes motivation is bribery. I know, it's shallow, but I like stuff, so why not connect the stuff I want to the activity I want to do? Makes sense in my twisted little brain. So, as a reward for one week of running (I know, it isn't very long, but come on - I'm justifying buying stuff here) I'm going to buy new running shoes. I need some, but they're expensive, so I figure after I run for 1 week I'll have proven that I really do need those shoes. Right? And after 2 weeks of running, I'm going to reward myself with a new pair of jeans (did you see the really cute ones Grumperina bought?) to wear with the cute sweaters I'm going to knit this fall. Makes sense right? So far, running because it's good for me hasn't held up, so I'm hoping a good book and some material rewards get me over the hump (oh, and Cyndi is starting a running blog where we can support each other - that'll make a big difference too).

And because everyone in my office is horified and you all seem interested in my black belt test, I have a picture of my arm after sparring last night. Only click if you want to see - don't say I didn't warn you. Left Arm Nice huh? Just a little something I have to look forward to next week.

Because of karate last night I didn't knit a stitch. But I will eventually get the shrug finished, I promise! Have a great Friday and a nice weekend.

Oh my goodness, that looks *really* painful!! =( Does ice help?

The rewards system sounds like a good idea. I hope it works for you!

Bribery is a good motivator...think I'll give it a try, too.

Hehe - we think alike... I just went online this morning and ordered another pair of running shoes and a cute running top & shorts. :) And I'll definitely be treating myself to a few more clothing goodies as a reward at some point. I'm going to have to check out that book to... looks like a good resource.

Ouch! That had to hurt! Hope it's better soon!

that bruise looks nasty!! and you're getting more?? seems to me running is a calmer sport. a running support blog sounds great! i'm in!

oh my god, there should be a larger warning before that click! That looks painful, hope it gets better soon.

I just bought 2 pairs of running shoes today, enough to last me through November, and wonder if I've just negated any potential self-bribery...

Ouch! And that's about all I have to say on that, it pains me to look at it.

Rewards are great, they make the hard things bearable.

Good luck on your test by the way, in case I forget next week.

Whoa! You're a tough bia-hay (yes, that's my version of b***h)! Stephanie, I admire you. Maybe I'll start running now....mmm, maybe. What jeans are you going to get? The anthro link only came up on the jeans page, not a certain one.

Remind me not to piss you off.

;-)

Ummm, owwie...hope that heals up fast and doesn't hurt too much. Remind me to bring you along the next time I walk down dark scary alleys.

The best part of any sport is the gear! Load up! Wait 'til you start golfing...

You mean I need to make sacrifices, like running, in order to reward myself with jeans? That message got erased from the machine, obviously ;).

you know i started running (which i hate with a passion) about 6 weeks ago...then managed to inflame my knee about 3 weeks ago. i'm allowed to start running again in another week. you've just inspired me to put that running book into my amazon shopping cart. roll on pay day!

I started running at the beginning of June and run on average 6 days a week and sometimes 7. I did buy some running shoes about 2 weeks into it and wow what a difference they made. My feet felt heavy in my cross-trainers. I am by no means an exercise fanatic, but I can run 2 miles without stopping now, then I walk about 1 mile or so to cool down. Today I did the eliptical (?) machine for 45 mins. instead of running and it was definitely a different work out. Plus, I got to watch TV while doing it. My motivation is . . . I have to exercise before I can sit and knit or scrapbook. I have more stamina but I still don't like doing it. Your arm looks painful - heal quickly. I like your blog and may learn to do one myself soon. I'm computer challenged!

You should have seen my thighs after trying to help someone pass their jib test in the Charles River (Boston). Good Luck in the running.

That's a beaut! Now I know why Karate never really appealed to me! Running either...bad knees. Walking is it for me, but I envy those who can run.

That book looks interesting. You'll have to let me know how you like it! What a bruise! :)

I used to take Tae Kwan Do & as soon as we had to spar (I got very badly bruised) I decided it wasn't for me. I loved everything except the sparring! I'm a wimp!!! ;-)
